*shudder*

Even though it was from the 50s, it still begs the question, just where and to whom was this twisted propaganda crap shown to?

I’m still shaking my head in disbelief.

When I was a teenager we were warned against hitchhiking because of the predatory HETEROSEXUALS who might pick us up.

He didn't know Ralph was sick. But not a sickness visible like smallpox...homosexuality. Oh my God....

Dee

Yes Dylan, thank God we're moving on. Well, most of us are – except your Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson types.

The only "sickness" here was in the heads of whoever put this little gem on film. I especially love the ending when for good measure the warning is repeated, "One never knows when the homosexual is about." with the added comment, "They may appear normal."

"... but no less dangerous and contagious...." (?)

Beware good people. This homosexual thing is dangerous, contagious, and may be present in those who appear normal.

Unfuckingbelievable!! Surely does beg the question who this was shown to! Can you imagine being a young, queer person watching that being told that you were sick and contagious... All the more reason we need to be out and ABOUT!!!! The message may not be that blatant now but its still there.

Well... Remember it was only 1973 when the APA removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. I believe gender identity is still listed as such, unfortunately. So until 1973, even the Psychiatric Association branded homosexuals as "sick." It surprises me how recent that was and how many forget history.

Well... Remember it was only 1973 when the APA removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. I believe gender identity is still listed as such, unfortunately. So until 1973, even the Psychiatric Association branded homosexuals as "sick." It surprises me how recent that was and how many forget history.

A brief history (excerpt) -

May 27, 1895 - Famous writer Oscar Wilde is sentenced to two years hard labour for having sexual relations with male prostitutes.

1930s (Germany) - Gay men and lesbians are imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps. The men are forced to wear pink triangles on their prison uniforms while the women wear black triangles. Nearly 50,000 men will be convicted for homosexuality during the reingn of Hitler.

1952 (USA)- The American Psychiatric Association adds homosexuality to its list of mental disorders.

1953 (USA) - President Eisenhower bans the employment of gays and lesbians.

1965 (Canada) - Everett Klippert admits to the police that he is gay and that he is unlikely to change. He is sent to prison (in 1967) as a dangerous sex offender. He doesn't get released until July 20, 1971 even though the Criminal Code in Canada is changed in 1969.

1967 (Canada) - Justice Minister Pierre Trudeau says "...there's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation..." and proposes amendments amendments to the Criminal Code that would, among other things, relax the laws against homosexuality.

1967 (England & Wales)- Private consensual sex between men over 21 is decriminalized in England & Wales.

1968 (USA)- Lesbians are arrested for cross-dressing because they are wearing fly-front pants (Houston, Texas)

1969 (Canada) - Trudeau's amendments pass into the Criminal Code and homosexuality is de-criminalized in Canada.

June 27, 1969 (USA) - The New York City police raid the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village. Violence errupts as gays, tired of being hounded and harrassed, fight back en masse for the first time. The backlash and protests last for several days and this becomes known as the start of the fight for gay rights.

1971 (USA)- The sodomy laws are repealed in Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho and Oregon. Also, Jack Baker and his partner, James McConnell, unsuccessfully sue for a marriage lisence in Minnesota. A judge then allows them to legalize their relationship by letting McConnell adopt Baker.

April 1972 (USA) - The US Supreme Court says it's okay to refuse to employ someone who is gay.

March 1973 (USA) - New York City Parents of Gays holds its first meeting with nearly 20 people in attendance. Eight years, and 20 more support groups nationwide, later they become the national group known as P-FLAG - Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

1973 (USA) - Homosexuality is removed from the American Psychiatric Association's list of mental disorders.

Yes David and they have a moustache. Didn't you know that?

Now, with my enthousiastically growing facial hair I'm glad I'm not bald. People might think I am gay!

I showed this to a friend of mine who replied (in a joking manner, of course) : "Now that just can't be true. No self-respecting homosexual would be caught dead wearing that."

I was amused, at least.

The ground-dwelling homosexual is Native to North America and every other continent on Earth. It thrives on mixed grasses prairies.

The water-borne homosexual is known to swim well, and can frequently be caught riding the crest of waves from Navy ships chartered by The Village People. Disco music and abundant dining on naturally occurring Quiche Lorraine (http://www.ehow.com/how_12619_make-quiche-lorraine.html) have helped preserve tracts of habitat for the homosexual, and during the past 25 years they have made a come back world wide, except in Latin American and Middle Eastern counties where their numbers are nearing extinction due to restrictions on their movements.

They may appear normal.

Dee,

Thank you so much for posting this important public service film for our safety. I learned much from this enlightening production:

1) Never accept rides while hitch hiking from people that drive Fords!

2) Never trust real nice guys!

3) All men named Ralph with mustaches and partially bald are homosexuals!

4) Homosexualism is a highly contagious disease!

5) All homosexuals DEMAND intimate relationships with young boys named Jimmy Barnes!

6) Friendly people are homosexuals

7) One NEVER knows when the homosexual is about!

Again Dee, thanks I will feel safer from now on armed with this valuable knowledge...

Best to all

R. (on the guard for homosexuals) from Pa.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------OMG!

And I've just spent an entire weekend surrounded by lesbians. Does this mean I'm going to start to be attracted to women? Oh, hang on, I'm ALREADY attracted to women, so it seems that other people's (homo)sexuality has no affect on me at all. Hmmm, maybe THAT should be contagious.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a serious note, I don't think I've ever heard anything more ridiculous, even considering the time that this was produced, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't recall anything like that being shown in Britain.

Thanks for that, Dee, I know there's still a long way to go, but at least it shows that we're making some progress with social enlightenment.

Regards,

PeteCC

Ghastly ain't it Pete. And worse, I apparently have been going about this homosexuality thing all wrong. All this time I should have been demanding intimate relationships with members of my own sex. Oy! How could I have been so stupid?!?

Guess that makes me just one of those “practising” homosexuals I’ve heard so much about.

Weird indeed.

I was thinking, we who are male homosexuals owe it to the mentality of a generation who would produce such an absurd propaganda film as Boys Beware for the following:

Sissy, faggot, fairy, light in the loafers, cookie duster, queer, bugger (British), bender (British), pansy, and the old simple standard: fag.

I believe it was BGG's mother who once told her: "There is nothing queer about two people loving each other."

In truth, after I was taken aback, the happy gay music in this little movie only heightens the absurdity of it all.

Life. Sometimes all you can do is laugh.

For the confused and skittish, you can now warn the world that the homosexuals may be about by wearing your very own nifty educational T-shirt! :p

Oh Des, we'll go for lavender then.

I have seen some fun t-shirts like:
"I'm not a lesbian, but my girlfriend is"
"Nobody knows I'm a lesbian" (written on the shirt with big letters)

Cool!
