Now that I got your attention.... :-)

Janis Ian is the "New Folk" with her new CD. You must have this CD in your collection! IT WILL BE a classic grammy winnner like "Breaking Silence"

Hi Janis.....
I got your new CD in the mail....put it in my CD player in my car.... listen to it 3 times now on my way to work.....you know I how i was holding on to your Columbia days sounds... but on this CD...you really got something here! :-)

Anyway....The recording sounds are great. The songs are great. Your vocal track are amazing...very clean...right on target with emotions..... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...... this CD of yours really makes me happy to listen to..... My ears are not looking for the clarinets or oboes or strings... ya got that Janis Ian bass line sounds I love in each song.... nice organ sounds coming in and out on some of the songs tracks... stories lines make me think..... it's like u r in my living room each morning in my car just sitting there with the guitar telling me your stories..... each song has a picture frame around them..... I can see & feel what you are saying... WOW... amazing... Janis... amazing ... Good recording job!

Hi Shirley. Yep, that subject line DID get my attention! LOL

Welcome back. I remember you and about your friend, Clare.

Glad you love FINB as we all do! It is indeed another "Janis Classic", or "Classic Janis", whichever you prefer.

Stick around. *Some* of us are nuttier than ever! Not me, of course. Only some......;)

Hi Shirley,
Thats an interesting comment--'looking for Janis's Columbia days'--masterpieces every single one--And Folk Is The New Black is another one, isn't it? odd that on my iTunes it is categorized as POP??

go figure

One of the things I love about this collection is that even though the arrangements are sparse the sound is full.

Does that make any sense?

Main thing with anything on the Columbia label is to ignore it and find the equivalent on Cooking Vinyl/Rude Girl records. Your ears will thank you. Especially in the case of "Between the Lines"....honestly, my scratchy old vinyl copy sounds better than their CD.....

Hi Marcia, I remember you too... this board was so supportive to me which I'll always be greatful for. FINB is really a great CD. Classis Janis is mainly what I'm getting from the structure of the song writing. I'll be sticking around.... and yes....only some on this board are nutty....! LOL

Yes...."the sound is full" does make a lot of sense musically on Janis's FINB CD. Every note and sounds was well considered in each song arrangement on this CD. Everytime I listen to it...I'm noticing that the music really paints the frame around the lyrics in every song on this CD. Don't get me wrong...I like Janis previous released CDs after Columbia days.... but this FINB...is really outstanding work. I'm learning musically from her again on this one....recording without a lot of musical layers is truly art and a master of the craft that every artist should strive for..... ON this CD...Janis recorded what was needed....nothing more....not a note less... FINB really should be up for a grammy.... :)

I understand your comment to ignore the Columbia label...but only from the point of purchasing a better sounding CD. If it was not for Columbia records signing Janis on as an artist.... this board might not exist.... (Yes the contracts were not fair business wise back then...but that was across the board for all artists...Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Prince all got beat by the record companies.) Good thing is....Janis is a true artist and because of that.... her music went on to other labels....
PS. I have all her CDs from Japan to replace my vinyl. :D

Hi Shirley
I replaced my Janis Ian Japanese import CDs with the new and improved CDs sold from this site--and they DO sound alot better.
Besides you get some fantastic updated liner notes.
Like you, I am forever grateful for those Columbia years!
