does anyone know how I transfer my iTunes library to my other laptop - as I have mentioned elsewhere, this one's cd drive has given up the ghost and I want to make cd copies of my iTunes library?

if I download iTunes onto my other laptop can I just log in there and find them as per normal....

forgive me for I am ignorant of these matters.....

ps I have a couple of Janis albums which i purchased on iTunes and want to put them on CD:confused:

is, that there's no option to mail the music on your account or to save it on other mediums as cds. I'd like to save them on my usb stick but - as far as I know - the only way is to burn it on a cd and then save it on your pc...

I use the "import export" and send them to a usb drive, then move to the new computer. you have to be careful to direct them to the exact right place. Also, sometimes I end up having to play each one for a second to get the computer to recognize them. A royal pain in an otherwise foolproof item.

There is an excellent reference article on ilounge.com that describes the process in detail. Look here http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to-a-new-hard-drive/

Have fun!

Obviously it's not "foolproof" enough for me, Janis. I directed the song to my usb stick but what I found there was only a text file... Don't know what has happend to the Patty Larkin song...

iTunes is great to get music that is no longer available or if you want only one song but it could be much more comfortable. But couldn't this be intended???

why couldn't the whole iTunes thing be more user friendly?

The safest way to move your entire library is to back it up onto DVD from the old machine then upload the library onto the new machine. Apple's website has a tutorial on how to do a backup. I'll look for the document in my files and post it if I can find it.

OR

You could go to your My Music folder and find the iTunes Music folder and copy the folder over to a USB drive then transfer the folder to the new machine. Make sure the that the new iTunes program points to the same the folder in the same place (My Music\iTunes). I transfer music back and forth between my laptop and my desktop like this all the time though not usually the whole library...usually 4 or 5 albums at a time but it will work for any amount of data just drag and drop the folders on the USB into iTunes to load them into the program.

Good luck,
