Here is a lesson learned the hard way by a tech-tard (me). I got my cellphone upgraded to Motorola V3m and was all excited that I would be able to download the Janis ringtones. HAH! Turns out that my service provider, Verizon Wireless has blocked the functions that would allow you to download ringtones from your computer in order to force you to use their V-Cast service to buy music, video and game functions. I did not figure this out until AFTER I paid $29.99 to download Motorola Phone Tools and found that the MultiMedia function was blocked. Of course, there is nothing on the Motorola website that tells you that is going to happen until it is too late.

I did find a website where someone explains how you can circumvent Verizon’s blocking, but apparently you will void the phone’s warranty and possibly disable the TransFlash memory card (if you have one).

No wonder there are so many sites out there called, “Verizon Sucks.”

Cingular sucks, too. Unles you have the Razr (sp?)... because on my phone it costs money to download a Janis Ian ringtone. I'll pay it once, once I'm sure which one I want and how I get it on.

To add insult to injury, when I called Motorla to ask them they were charging me $3.95 for shipping when I ordered a download directly to my computer. The customer "service" (and I use that term VERY loosely) told me it was because they were going to ship me a data cable. So yesterday I get a box from UPS - 9"X9"X9"X9" with nothing but an installation and setup brochure and a return shipping label inside. There was no option under "Return Reason" codes for invisible merchandise. So I call motorola again and spend 45 minutes of my life that I will never get back on hold with some guy in Bangalore without a clue, until he finally tells me he is going to transfer me to another department that deals with "the West," and then disconnects me. Fortunately he at least gave me the number to which he had intended to connect me. So I called that number and spoke with a perky Valley-girlish young lady named Audrey (she's probably really in Bangalore as well). I recite the whole litany yet again to Audrey, and after she puts me on hold a couple of times, she comes back on to tell me they have been having some problems with their people incorrectly charging for shipping for downloads. No shi*. But at least she gives me the option of either getting a cable - although the cable does not come with the download - or refunding my credit card for the shipping charge. Since I already had a cable, I told her to just refund the shipping charge. We will see if they actually do it.

All the while I keep hearing the lyrics to that old folk tune in my head; "If I Had A Hammer. . . "
