Yay!

One of my favourite singer-songwriters covers one of my favourite singer-songwriters!

Can't wait to hear it.

Thanks for the heads up, Bryan.

Like the song and the video too, Sky.

Factoid: Insensitive (1994) became a smash hit in Italy when it was used in a ad for bluejeans.

Insensitive was not written by Jann, but by her friend Anne Loree.

Jann's mama sewed all the drop down banners thrown from the buildings in this video.

The first single, released to AC and hot AC radio prior to Christmas, is Freda Payne's 1971 wartime classic "Bring The Boys Home"

You can hear it (autoplay) if you load this page of Jann's website:

I will check out that site and try to hear that song. I used to have a cd of hers, and I was just looking for it a few minutes ago and couldn't find it. Well actually I found the case but it was empty. :( since this is the internet and we are rather anonymous (at least I am) I can tell you that the cd meant a lot to me because I had been sexually abused from the time I was about 5 or 6 until I was 14. and when I first heard her music I was really making changes in my life, and talking about that for the first time with a therapist and my husband. I felt that songs like gasoline, and I'm still here voiced how I was feeling inside (at that time) about myself and life. That info isn't something I wouldn't share with someone here in real life. Shhh don't tell the neighbors LOL.

Just checked out "Insensitive". Hadn't heard of Jann Arden before and now I think I need to buy the album. Thanks for the "heads up" Dee.

Bill,

The song Insensitive is from her 1994 CD, Living Under June.

It's also on a 2001 collection of hits called Greatest Hurts.

Just for your info. ;)

Oh yah, she's also from Calgary Alberta and has a great sense of humour, much like our Janis.

Living Under June is really a terrific album.

It sure is, Janis.

Another song from that album that I am really fond of is Unloved, a duet with Jackson Browne.

Ok. I never did find the cd I had that I lost of Jann Arden so I finally went to amazon.com and bought 2 new cd's. I need my Jann Arden fix.

And by the way, I was listening to folk is the new black on my home from work. I have listened to The great divide before but I really listened to it again tonight, and I really like it.

Sky,

Which two did you get (just out of curiosity)?

I have Feb 6 marked on my calendar to buy the new one - UNCOVER ME - with At Seventeen on it. Can't wait to hear it! :)

Hi Bryan,

Long time -- no see...

Thanks for reminding me about Jann Arden. Too bad she never got the airplay she deserved here in United States, much like another Canadian, Amanda Marshall (who's first CD is also brilliant and contains the song "Birmingham").

You prob'ly won't remember me
It's prob'ly ancient history
I'm one of the chosen few who went ahead and fell for you...

"Insensitive"...

Great lyric to when someone suddenly ignores you and doesn't have the decency to tell you why...

Nice to hear from you....with your knowledge of every singer/songwriter in the world, pretty much.

... I'm out of vogue I'm out of touch
I fell too fast I feel too much ...

It's like the woman can read my mind. Spooky! LOL

I'm looking forward to Jann's album too...

Feverish? Moi? As I sit here listening to the new CD under my headphones, I am both feverish and feeling stoked!

Just posted a review on Amazon.ca too.

UNCOVER ME hit the shelves here in Ottawa yesterday. This morning I got a copy at my local HMV, and I am mightily impressed. Jann not only revisits these songs from my childhood and youth with excellence, but makes them her own in interpretation. The original tune, "Counterfeit Heart" is beautifully performed as well.

Standout tracks for me are Jann’s cover of Janis Ian’s 70s hit song “At Seventeen,” Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” and the Petula Clark song “Downtown.” Love the groovy flashback 60s instrumentation on that one. It’s fitting that she closes the CD with a take on “Solitaire,” since I know Jann is a Carpenter’s fan as am I.

I love what she’s done with all of these songs! Those who are familiar with Jann Arden’s work are unlikely to be disappointed in this new release.

Is that Petula Clark's Downtown that Jann covers? It's about time to pull out Petula's greatest hits and give it a spin.

Yup, that's the one, and Jann does a very nice job on it as she does on At Seventeen. I'm very pleased with the CD overall.

Transcript of Jann's interview intro to At Seventeen from the February 26 broadcast of Jann Arden: Live at Revival on CMT Canada (Country Music Television).

"At Seventeen was the first song I ever learned on guitar – badly – because Janis is an amazing player. But I, oddly enough when Insensitive was big in Australia I met Janis there. And then, uh, fast forward a year I saw her at the Calgary Folk Festival and she invited me to sing At Seventeen with her. And she’s nodding at me: and now you take a verse. And I’ve sung it hundreds and hundreds of times. I – didn’t know it. So she’s, Janis Ian was going [mouths lyrics]. And I’m going, Were you saying sandwich? What are you saying?

So, [laughs] it was a pretty amazing moment to sit there and look at her. She’s, she’s little. She’s eloquent. This is a great great Americana writer she really is."

Dee,
I have sort of been thinking about naming this baby if it is a girl Arden. I started thinking about that name after I first saw this thread, and by how much I love Jann Arden music. What do you think about Arden as a first name? Is it a stupid girls name?
Sky

Dee

No Sky, I don't think it's a stupid name, for a girl or a boy actually. :)

(Arden is actually her middle name by birth.)
