View Full Version : On Line Tip Jar

Last year, a large percentage of the money raised for the foundation came from LRC's and the concert tip jar.
Since Janis won't be on the road this year, these sources of donations for the foundation won't be there.
So how are we gonna raise the money?
My proposal: An "On Line Tip Jar".
There are roughly 80 or so folks who post here on a regular basis. If each of those folks pledged 5 bucks a month to the foundation via PayPal, there's an easy $4800 right there, or almost half an LRC. And I know there are folks who can afford a little more than $5.
Anyone else have ideas?

Amy, I like the spirit of the idea, but I think we should follow the normal route of donating to the Foundation directly as and when we wish or can.
Although $5 a month is not too much, I for one would not like to commit to even that much as I need to pay very careful attention to my finances this year.
Also I think we'd need to be very careful so that no one felt there was any moral pressure to donate in order to be a rudie.
I think it's a good idea to start a subject like this, this is just my two cents.

Thats a great idea but..... The option of donations is and always has been available to us via pay-pal..... Knowing that some are on fixed incomes and or struggling to make ends meet so I would shy away from suggesting that people make pledges to stay up with others regardless of the amount... To those that do use this option one or more times a year I think thats great...
Best to you all

I in no way meant to pressure anyone into doing anything.
With no tip jar, no LRC's and no new albums for us to buy, I thought it would be a cool concept. The numbers were meant as a demonstration of how easily small amounts become larger when many people participate.
I hope those of you who can, will.

If I only could stop smoking I could pay $ 5 a day

I think its a great idea in principle, Amy. Though I too would hate for anyone to feel obligated. I think the core group donates what they can , when they can already .. but i do like your idea of the online tip jar.

i too like the idea of a virtual tip jar...maybe there is a way to create something called the virtual tip jar that we can visit when we choose and donate. i like the idea of the tip jar itself, makes me wanna reach in my pocket and find some extra and put it in just cause it;s there.

Good suggestion, Amy, but some of us are already committed to the Pearl Foundation via PayPal each month, but do not talk about it. There's no need to "sign" up as those who cannot afford may feel left out. But it's a good suggestion for those who can, and who are not committed yet, to do so this year.

Uhhh, I think you just did ;)
So I did. But it's a worthy commitment. And I'm sure others do, too.

Like David, I couldn't possibly commit myself. I have FAR too much going on in my life for this to hold much meaning this year. I think buying the CDs and DVDs is my #1 priority at the moment, and next year as soon as Janis announces her next tour I shall check Dates to see which ones I MIGHT be able to get to and all this HAS to be within my Budget.
The cost of living is extremely high in Britain, and I only have a set amount to spend each week. Getting a job is of course, top priority.

I seem to have stirred up a hornets nest of some sort.
This was in no way intended to be a criticism of anyone.
It was in no way intended to ask anyone for any kind of commitment, except perhaps to themselves.
There is no expectation that anyone must pay to play, as the saying goes.
It was just a conceptual proposal made out of concern for the foundation and fundraising for this year.
I know many of us contribute when ever we can, in many ways, and I hope everyone that can will continue to do so.

We know, Amy, don't worry. It's well-intentioned and though I can't commit myself to a monthly contribution, I will donate whenever I can :)

Marjan, there's a new Medicine out which stops the effects of Nicotine on the Brain, and therefore renders smoking to the pointless pile of activities. It came out mid-December. I shall be pouncing right on it once I found out the name of this wonder drug and will post the link here :D

It's called Champix

I've done so in the past, and will do so as resources permit Amy. I read nothing but good intentions in you posting what I consider a good and creative idea.
I can only repeat what Dee said! I still think it's a great idea!

for those who can afford it. I'd love to be able to afford it Mimi, but with 21st birthdays, 18th birthdays and so on coming through the cracks in the walls this year, and me with no job  I'm stretched to the absolute limit as it is :(

Hi Amy,
I don't think you stirred a nest, in fact I think you did rather well... The spirit of your idea is wonderful, and anytime a person looks for creative ways to assist the foundation it can't be a bad thing... There is no anger in the discussion going on here on this thread but there is thought and thats a good thing... Anytime people think it's a good thing... Except for (REDJACK and GISLI)....
People that express ideas that are actually in the best interests of others is always a good thing... You need not be defensive, in fact you should feel pride for the discussion going on... Rudies are thinking!!!
Thank you Amy, sometimes we forget....
Very best to you

Amy, a "Virtual Tip Jar" is a good mental image for me to form when making donations to the Pearl Foundation. Another image that comes to my mind is that of a pearl necklace.

The name of the anti-smoking drug is Champix - made by Pfizer. I heard it highly recommended by a leading Irish lung oncologist who himself was a heavy smoker and only succeeded on quitting on his 7th attempt years ago. Champix is approved in Europe; not sure about the US but it did receive priority status from the FDA so, if it is not approved yet, I imagine it soon will be. Of course it doesn't mean it will be a walk in the park, like all these aids, people need to be motivated and committed but it does appear to be the best thing discovered to date for most smokers trying to quit.
Yes, I like the idea of the online tip jar - nice one Amy.
It's a nice idea Amy. I do agree with David and all. But I do like the intent of your idea. I have another idea for smokers who are trying to quit, or anyone who wants to stop doing some kind of bad habit that costs a lot of money.
Say if you drink 3 glasses of wine every day and you bring it back to one. You put aside the financial equivalent of that 2 glasses of wine. The same thing you can do with diets, stopping smoking etc. After a while (say every three months) you can donate that amount. The more you were able to set aside, the better you did for your own health.
And financially it shouldn't matter for you in the end. If you're on a tight budget you can maybe donate half or third of the amount. Doesn't matter how much. It's meant as an extra motivation to stop doing that nasty habit (or do it less) This way you AND the PF benefit from it. If you can't put your habit in money, you just make up reasonable amounts.
