My dictionary says the mistaken full form is babies' ventilated diapers! Origin late 19th cent.: acronym from the name of the manufacturers. It's a type of boxer shorts.

Not goin' there, thank you very much. But underwear is indeed involved.

Aren't BVD's made for guys? Not intending any comment on the song, mind, which I love....the semi-singalong at Janismania will never be forgotten!

Yes, boxers are a bloke's garment as I understand it. Mind you, there's that famous scene in 'Desperately Seeking Susan' where Madonna dons a pair of man's pants.

Oh I dunno, I have a couple of pairs of Janis boxers that I'm particularly fond of.....

they make them for women to wear as well, and not just those women who are partial to birkenstocks and hummus ;)

Oh fer crissakes, do we have to teach you EVERYTHING?! ;) ;)

They are a type of shoe/sandal usually with a cork type bottom, rumored to be quite popular with hippies and lesbians.

Here's a link to the website, I'm sure you've seen them but just didn't know what to call them. http://www.birkenstockusa.com/

I see... thank you. They look comfy.
I must be getting old. I used to admire shoes for their looks, but now I look to see if they would rub or not!

As a habit left over from my days in the saddle, I actually wear Hanes Boxer Briefs!

See.. women's undies tend to have a little seam across the crotch...in a very inconvenient location when one is spending many hours in the saddle... the boxer briefs are smooth as a baby's butt in that regard!

The same but of construction applies to riding in blue jeans for very long... riding breeches do not have the 4 seams coming together in that "bad spot".

i lov e a good pair of boxers now and then, and it is my understanding, having 3 brothers and 15 nephews that BVD's are indeed underwear at one time considered to be just for men, know more than one woman who wears them. like i said a nice pair of boxers can be comfy from time to time, but I don't go for the tighty whities.
