Thanks Paularoid, Ben, Janis, Dee and all for your help... I have successfully uninstalled Norton from my laptop and it is now running much more quickly :)
I remember Janis saying I would need to empty my trashcan after uninstalling... can anybody tell me what this is and how I empty it?
thanks again :) :)

It's also called the "Recycle Bin" or just "Recycle". It should be on your desktop. Just right-click that icon and make the choice to empty it or delete all items within it. If it is NOT on your desktop then you'll have to go about things in the circuitous route. Click "Start" in the bottom left corner of your screen, then "Programs", then "Accessories", then "System Tools", then "Disk Cleanup" and you'll get there. I just remembered though that you're running WinXP and the route I just mentioned is slightly different. It's similar but just a little bit different and I can't remember the specifics. Poke around a bit using a similar path and you'll find it.

thanks Paul that makes sense to me :)
Glad if I was any help, David. I used to use Norton AV too, so I know what a pain it can be. AVG seems to be less taxing on the system I find, and does just as good a job ... for free!
