Checked into a hotel in Stuart, FL, with high speed. At least, for the first half hour. Poof! gone. Logged off all on its lonesome.
Logged back on, couldn't get in. Noticed when I checked "Status" that the IP address was the stupid fake Microsoft one; tried the Repair function to no avail. Finally called and got tech support.
Janis: Hi. I'm calling from X hotel in Stuart FL, out on your wireless with a Vaio using Win XP OS. Already rebooted twice, tried the repair function, tried to ping yahoo.com, to no avail. Computer just shows the standard fake Microsoft IP address, won't resolve. What's up?"
Tech: ...
Janis: Is it on your end or the hotel, or both - any idea?
Tech: Um... hang on...
Janis: (Drums fingers against table.
Tech: Thanks for letting us know. They're completely maxxed out; I'll try to knock some users off.
Janis: Great. About 15, then?
Tech: Yeah... you IT for someone?
Janis: Nah. I just keep bad company.

Well, Janis...

...if ya ever wanna give up the road, we could use you here on the Helpdesk! You demonstrate a greater understanding of IP networking than most of our staff!

You've turned Janis into a Geek! Good work. They must have been relieved to be talking to someone who knew something. I get all the Tech Help people after my mother has been trying to deal with them for hours, and they sound ready to reach through the phone and strangle someone.

Im new to all of this forum talk but after learning playing and fixing computers for a while does that make me some kind of geek or is my old age against me???

Geekness is a state of mind, there's no age limit :)

Welcome to the looney messageboard, Sandiekid!

Guess I am not a geek, after all....what Janis posted was almost (yes, almost) totally foreign to me. I know how to run my puter and fix certain things, but I need more training to be a true geek....;)

I know what I am talking about at times when it comes to computerez, but the minute I get on line or on the phone with support I get tongue tied and say things like, "thingy", "that thingy", that thing that takes you places", it is embarassing!!
