View Full Version : Enough! You Hit Me With the Rain!

Okay, didn't need any more rainstorms, thanks. It is the "rainy" season in Las Vegas right now, and we were already getting smaller showers. I was thrilled, the small showers made me feel so happy!

Then, last night a few storms systems came by. The first one dumped rain and boomed for a while. The second lighted up the sky for a bit, dumped more rain, and seemed to go away. Then, I'm not sure if it was the second coming back, or a third coming in, but after my shower I was all set to go to bed and the sky rumbled, opened up, and dropped more rain! These streets don't have drains and no one knows how to drive here in the rain!

The storm continued to worsen all night, even though I eventually dozed off I was woken at six in the morning (after dozing off at three or four, all my time) by a clap of thunder that made it sound like it hit my roof! It didn't, of course, but it had the effect of making me nervous. I couldn't go back to bed for quite a while, and I definitely don't think I got caught up on sleep as I woke up once and for all at eleven.

Sirens and thunder and rain... I'm not used to the last two any more, and I've never been used to the first. I'm wondering if the strip got flooded or not. I couldn't see the lightning as all the windows in my room are covered by wooden shutters (they're inside, but I just did not want to bother looking for the lightning if I couldn't see it out the one over my head), so I couldn't tell how far away the storm really was. Kind of frightening.

Just saying... Don't saind me any more rain, please! At least no more storms, not at night, I want to sleep!

Song, if you don't like rain, you should try living in the UK :p

That's the point, David, I love rain! When I first moved out here and had no rain for so long I posted "Listening for the Rain" because I missed the rain. I used to sleep through autumn storms so easily! Unless the power went off... for some reason if the power goes off I wake up. >.< But now I'm not used to it, and all of a sudden Las Vegas is rainy?! What is with all the rain! Just when I was finally getting used to falling asleep to sprinklers rather than rain!

It was actually more the sirens and the thunder than the rain that kept me up. They must have been really close, because my room is the "Music Room" and used to have a radio station run out of it--in other words it wasn't sound proof, but definitely sound resistant.

Gil Grissom? Tarantula? Haven't seen him...

I'll come live in the UK any time... as long as it is out in the country with trees. At least there the weather is a little more consistent. Las Vegas is a desert! There aren't any drains in the road! The natives here are a little perplexed. Windshield wipers... what are those? Slippery when wet... never. Yikes!

Well there you have it. Careful what you wish for cos you just might get it. ;)

I don't like thunderstorms either, Song. I don't normally sleep well as it is, but nothing worse than mother nature's fury waking you up every five minutes.

Oh, I sleep so well on thunderstorms. The louder the better.
Usually I snore louder than any thunderstorm can bang though... :D

I'm jealous!

Just to the north and west of you, we get no thunderstorms here. I haven't heard or seen one for more than a year, now. I do miss them. Send one my way, will ya?

And if you think you've got a monopoly on rainy seasons, come visit me sometime ;) Try 35 consecutive days of rain. After a while, you simply get used to being moist all the time.

Oh, and Song, you're probably getting more rain for the same reason we're not: El Nino. It's supposed to be a dry winter for us this year and so far they're right. Been gorgeous weather here for the past couple weeks. This just means drought in the summer, but I'll be long gone by then and back firmly in the East. Could be worse for both of us, though. We could be in Buffalo under 2 feet of snow!

New England, England... I can deal with their weather.

I'll send you some, Rkitko. Actually it rained almost every day of my summer, but it is supposed to in Maine by the ocean.

No... I usually don't mind a little storm, but I found out this one even woke up Dad (that doesn't happen, normally). I kept worrying about the most foolish stuff: Is that going to hit my house? It's really close... Is that tree going to fall on me if it's hit? Are those sirens so close because something already hit the main house? I'm on a metal frame pull-out couch, does that matter?

Really really hard to go to sleep when you worry so about such foolish things.

Song, I have a great friend who lives in Las Vegas, and she had plannned to go to the Ren Faire yesterday or today, but the storms put a stop to those plans, big time!
We have some wonderful T-storms in Cincinnati....sounds like timpani rolling clear across the sky and back again.
When I lived in CA, we had rain all winter; one rainy season in LA it rained more than 40 days and nights in a row and I was about ready to go build an ark. When I lived in SF, the wind would blow the rain parallel to the street.
That was really something to see, since we lived on a very steep hill, and the rain would actually blow parallel UP the hill! And the Eucalyptus smelled so good!
