I had a dilemma on my hands in that I had bought 4 tickets for Janis' show in Owings Mills MD on 28 October and won't be able to use them because I will be traveling then.

So I have been trying to figure out who among my friends and acquaintances would be deserving and appreciative of an incredibly valuable gift of 4 free tickets (good seats too, 2nd row orchestra).

I took the tickets to church with me this morning. Today was the day that our new intern minister was giving her first sermon. She is new to the ministry (Unitarian Universalism) but she had completed a career in government service before. She gave a great introductory sermon not only describing how she came to be a UU minister, but also weaving her personal experiences into more universal themes. At one point, she mentioned that she met her partner in 1976, and I thought "Well, she's in the right demographic age-wise."

After the service I introduced myself and told her that I thought she had a real gift for the ministry. I asked her if she was famiiar with Janis Ian, and her eyes lit up, and she said, Oh! I grew up with Janis Ian! So I gave her the tickets as a welcome to the congregation gift so she and her partner and whomever else they choose to invite can go to the show. She was thrilled. She said she had not seen Janis perform since the 1970s.

So even though I am going to miss the show, now I have a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that someone else who really loves Janis is going to have a wonderful time with those tickets.

Wow, talk about timing! And good for you Oak. What an opportunity to pay it forward (http://www.payitforwardmovement.com/).

I love hearing stories like this.

Great story, Oak. It's funny, but I'm also a UU, and she sounds exactly like our current intern minister! Wonder if ours is a Rudie too. I'll have to ask her.
