What kind of birthday cake do you like?

My aunt (who always lived with us) used to bake me pink marble cake with pineapple filling and 7-minute frosting. She is now 87 and usually says she has "never made" many of the things that she used to make.

My brother's cake was always caramel cake with caramel icing. As a kid, he would eat all the cake then roll the icing into a ball and eat it like candy.

I don't usually get a birthday cake now. My daughter was born 20 years ago on my "off" birthday (Feb 28), so she gets the cake. And rightly so.

Maybe she gets it...but you take the cake, Karen!
I think you should have one with 4 tiers every 4 years, four different kinds!
That caramel sounds simply divine, and I love the way he ate it...sounds like something I'd do...save the best for last!

My mom used to make a yellow and white cake, both batters together and pulled through each other...I think the white was angelfood...so they marbled. She called it a Daffodil cake, and usually iced it with chocolate, since we both liked that a lot...really good cake, too. Ever hear of it?

We have a developing tradition at work now.. my boss makes a "cake of choice" for whomever has a birthday. I chose chocolate and cherries for mine.

Boss lady delivered... the cake was rich, chocolatey, and had this awesome filling of dried cherries, dark chocolate, cinamon yummy stuff.. definitely a great way to take an afternoon break!

The chocolate/cherry sounds yummy!

My personal favorite is a moist devil's food with white mint icing. It is SOOOO good!

I really don't know what it was, I only have a guess that it was a Meringue Cake. I only got one piece because it was at a "retreat" sort of place in Belize (far, far out in the mountains). We had told them repeatedly that it was going to be our fifteenth birthday, so they made us a cake! I haven't really got a clue what it was, though it tasted of fruits and was very sweet, but not sickly sweet like vanilla frosting so often is. The frosting was a pale purple and crispy on the outside while being soft on the inside. From everything I put together I believe it was a Meringue Cake.

I like chocolate cake with raspberry filling and icing. There is a bakery here in town that does the best cakes called Chandlers...they make it the best!

I've never had a caramel cake with caramel icing but I'm sure if I did it would be my new favorite, and I'm very fond of spice cake too.
But there's a bakery near my office from which I always get cakes for staff birthdays. They choose what they want and I get it.

My hands down favorite is a cake I call Boston Cream Pie on Acid.

yellow chiffon cake, vanilla custard filling with the most amazing milk chocolate fudge frosting. oh darn I got drool on the keyboard.................

Ace! Chocolate and mint!?!? One of my FAVORITE flavor combos! MMMmm

I haven't looked lately, but there used to be a caramel cake mix (Duncan Hines, I think). The caramel icing is cooked and VERY rich. I'll find a recipe and post it. It comes out the consistency of fondant, so it does roll up quite nicely. I'm not much of a frosting person, but I do like a good chocolate frosting.

Dian, there is a restaurant in Flossmoor, IL (Fresh Starts) that makes a St. Phillipe's (sp?) Cake that is to DIE for! Dark chocolate cake that is kind of dense, MOIST red raspberry filling that kind of soaks into the cake (I'm dyin', here!), and fudge frosting! I haven't had any in MANY years! May have to hit Flossmoor when we're there in May!

Bat, I've never heard of that cake, but I don't know if the white part could have been angel food. When making angel food cake, you have to be careful not to have the batter come in contact with any oil or fat, so I don't know if mixing the 2 kinds of batter would work.

Something like there are no calories if your friends tell you about it on the internet? I'm making it a rule, now!!! :D

And there are no calories in "research." After all, I do have to check to make sure you all know what you're talking about. You never know about the internet ;)

My boss is more like a younger sister than a boss. She and I are just about a year apart (I'm older). We both come from first generation immigrant families in the Boston area, so we have very much in common. She was hired by the college 6 years ago to oversee the "customer service" end of ITS, which was definitely lacking in direction. One of the first things she did was hire me.

She is a very bright and very strong lady, having raised her only child, Ed, on her own.. the ex-husband bailed when the lad was only 3 months old, never provided a dime, etc. Ed is now 16, and a very charming, interesting and thoughtful guy.

Mary and I have become fast friends, which is sometimes problematic in the worker/boss relationship, but we are both adult enough to deal with it. She truly cares about her employees and does all she can to make sure we are taken care of, including birthday cake.

I am very lucky!

LOL Actually Denise, if you give me a recipe I CAN tell you the Weight Watchers points.....I'm a LIFETIMER and pay attention to that sort of thing, plus I have a little program/spreadsheet I put together to calculate points for my recipes.

but Karen's right, if you hear about it on a message board it is automatically low cal, just like if the cookies are broken the calories don't count. ;)
