View Full Version : Autumn has arrived
This is my all-time favourite autumn song:
Autumn Leaves
French lyrics by Jacques Prévert
English lyrics by Johnny Mercer
The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold
Since you went away the days grow long
And soon Ill hear old winters song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

These lyrics always bring tears to my eyes, they are my favourite too.
I had heard many times before.......but the first time I really heard it was 4 years ago. Our youngest child was just a few months old when my wife had to go to a hospital. It was´nt thought to be serious at first, but it turned out to be serious and for a long time there was a 50-50 chance of surviving.
Well it was a long drive to the hospital (an hour) and one day when I was driving not knowing what future lay ahead of me, this song sung by Eva Cassidy was played in the radio. Well, when hearing it all the emotions came crumbeling over me and something broke inside........
....but I miss you most of all, my darling
when the autumn leaves start to fall....
....was the sentence that caught my underconciousness.
Every now and then I put this cd on and think of "them times when I almost...." and it still brings tears to my eyes......I am listening to it now.....and I am thinking how lucky I am, how blessed life is and how every second of it should be thouroughly be enjoyed, because now, this moment, is all we have.....
Because of this experience I had to take care of our newborn for a while and it is strange but every time I go away for some days he asks where I am and misses me and wants to talk to me over the phone, as for the others, well for them I was just away......but when they´re mother went away they missed her and wanted to talk to her over the phone.
Dee, them lyrics, my favourite too.
Thank you for sharing those deeply moving memories, Gisli.
Those must have been a difficult days for you and your wife to live through.
That song has its place in my heart too.
I haven't heard the Eva Cassidy version, only the Natalie Cole one on her Unforgettable album of her late father's popular songs.

very pretty picture Daniel....which we had autumns like yours here in the UK
Thanks David. That was actually taken last year.
I heard (or read) the colours won't be quite as intense this year, for some forgotten-by-me reason.

In general I'm not crazy about Barry Manilow, but his song "When October Goes" is another beautiful autumn song. Nancy Wilson does a gorgeous version of it on an album Barry Manilow produced for her (the name of which escapes me). It also has Johnny Mercer lyrics -- found in a trunk by his wife after his death, which makes it all the more poignant.
