Hurricanes & tropical storms get such whimpy names....Who names them anyway? Some political appointee? I think that the names of storms shoud serve as a warning to the impending storm and not be some cute little name like Hurricane MaryBeth or the like...
How about:
"HURRICANE REDJACK"
or
"TROPICAL STORM BAT" :(
Now those are certainly stormworthy names.....Next we can work on Earthquakes....:
"EARTHQUAKE EVA"
Get the point?
Best to all
R. from the perfect weather zone of Pa... all year round 82 degrees, palm trees gently blowing in the wind.... Always sunny.... I mean really... would I lie to you?

Cute, Randy. Unfortunately, "Hurricane Ponytail" just doesn't have the same effect.

North Atlantic storms are named by the US National Hurricane Center from six lists that get rotated and old names "retired" when it is a major storm. Central North Pacific storms are named by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Hawaii. Western North Pacific storms are named by the Japan Typhoon Center. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration does its own thing and names the same storms differently. Etc. Etc.
I know it was a rhetorical question, but I thought I'd answer anyway ;)

There was a Hurricane Dave once...a rather powerful one, if I recall correctly.
I'd definitely vote for a Hurricane Redjack though. Or a Hurricane Blackbeard, just in case they don't get that far down the list.

When I was in college still living at home (Miami), we had a hurricane David. At the last moment it veered north and we only got a glancing blow. I can't recall if it did much damage anywhere. I DO remember going to work the next morning and driving through an amazing amount of water. Lucky I didn't stall out. I was working in a department store and the only one in my department that showed up. The only business that day was a woman who HAD to return a handbag. Can you imagine? We did negative dollars in my dept. that day! But David pretty much wimped out on us. So maybe Randy is right. There should be more "sinister" names for hurricanes.........
Marcia ;) not thinking that "bat" is really all that ferocious........

Yep, a hurricane David in 1979...

Oh, and in mid-September of 1999, my mother sent me out to fetch Chinese food in the middle of then tropical storm Floyd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Floyd) (it wasn't much more than a nasty rain storm when it reached New Jersey). I told her she was crazy and refused to go... until I got hungry.
Earthquake Eva? Hmm, it has a nice ring to it. But they already named something after me: 'Original sin Eva'. After that I can live with it if they don't name anything after me anymore. :D

Tropical Storm Patty doesn't sound so scary...
Maybe that's just because it's my mother's name.
Now if Tropical Storm Eva, or Tropical Storm Jen, or Tropical Storm Priscilla, or Tropical Storm Maryanne, or Tropical Storm Janis comes alone... I'll be sure to get out of the way.
Somehow, however, I don't believe I have much to worry about in Vegas.

"Hurricane Janis" does have a nice sound to it. And it could have its own theme music.

Yes, like the long version of "Ride Me Like a Wave" for starters......;)
I expect to see a tropical storm/hurricane Melba one of these days. :p
