View Full Version : Lmao!

No, not the acronym for "Laughing my ___ off!"

Something completely different and interesting. I'm talking about a Janis Ian Land Mail Art Object (LMAO).

Some of you may have heard of (and participated in?) nervousness.org's (http://www.nervousness.org) LMAO projects in the past. Well, membership is somewhat restricted there and you have to work your way up the ranks. I say bah! That's no fun. Why not create a LMAO right here on the JIMB?

So here's the deal.

If you're willing to participate, add your name to this post, keeping a list so we know what the order is (i.e. post the last person's list and add your name to it). It's no problem rearranging the order if it's more convenient that way (for example, say two people in the same household want to do their own pages but they're far apart in the order or if it's easier to combine all the people in one country? It's up to you. This is our project. The design is not a dictatorship but rather a cooperation. :))

You will private message or e-mail your mailing address to the person above you on the list. If you don't trust that person with your address, message me and we can shift the order (don't think that'll be a problem, but you never know). For example, since I will be originating the project, whoever is in spot #2 will need to give me their address; spot #3 will give #2 their address and so on.

It will be your responsibility to move the project forward through the entire list. Be prompt, but it's not a problem if you delay a bit because of creative block. Postage will be paid by you to the next person. The last person on the list will send it back to me. Don't worry, it will be small and postage shouldn't be much, even internationally. You can even reuse the packaging, provided it isn't falling apart!

"So... what are we mailing around?"

Each LMAO usually has a theme. You will have exactly one page, both sides, to do whatever it is you want with it. Be colorful. Collage, magazine cuttings, crayons, fingerpaints--whatever you want. Or be minimalist if the lyric and a few flourishes stand on their own as a complete page. It's a free-for-all. But each page must have your favorite (or at least one) Janis Ian lyric on it somewhere. Don't dispair if someone else has already used your lyric--your interpretation of it and your design will be much different. Each page that you complete should be signed with either your real name, user name on the message board, or both! Edit to clarify: This LMAO will be a binder full of blank pages, numbered to correspond with your position in line. You will receive the entire thing from the person before you with completed pages from them and the blank pages for people after you--it's more like a traveling art exhibit that grows with each person's contribution.

I've been toying with different endings. People will be putting a lot of time into this, and so everyone deserves a copy of it. At the end of the project, when I get the LMAO back, I can either make color copies and bind it for every single person that participated OR, if everyone agrees, I can make only a few copies (depending on how many people participate) and auction them off for the benefit of the Pearl Foundation. (for people that want to see the finished product but don't want to bid, I can scan in low-res copies of the pages) after the auction closes. OR! we auction off the only original copy and everyone else gets the bound color copies.

Open to: Everyone! Anyone on the board can participate.

Let me know what you all think :)

So here's the list so far:

Thanks for joining in :) I figure we'll start the project at around 10 people? Others can add on, but we can get it going since it will take a while through the mail and in the case of creativity block. Sound ok?

Oh? Oops! I blame Redjack!

What does Randy call it, then? I was raised 'round his area so it couldn't be a preferred colloquialism...?

(He must hate walking down a few aisles of Staples or Office Depot, then! The word's all over the place)

Yay, thanks for joining :) So gisli, did that mean you want to participate? :D You know you want to. Don't have to be an artist at all. Anyone can make art, though, that's part of the point of this project.

And I wanted to share this with all of you, since I just whipped it up for the cover:

Rkitko, I don´t know if you know but if you don´t know you should know what I know, what I know is that when it comes to art I watch.

Now you know what I know....

But let´s make this happen, count me in as no 7 right behind Dian........bear in mind that I am reeeeaaaaaaalllllllyyyyy slow, so the one number eight yahh have to wait.

That's OK, Gísli! Like I said, everyone can make art, even if you don't think you can. I'm not saying that everyone can reproduce a Picasso (maybe if it is a paint-by-number? ;)) or compose a piano piece like Liszt, but everyone is capable of producing something unique and creative using their talents.

You know, I once did this leadership learning course through my college and the whole day was centered on the many ways in which you can be creative. We took the traditional artistic approach (yes, I played with fingerpaints), but we explored other options. I found out through these exercises that while I may not be traditionally artistic, I'm creative in mechanics (we had to design a obstacle course for another team and that part of the program is what got my creative juices flowing). This may be why I'm more "left-brained" and better at science, math (mechanical creativity), and photography, which is very mechanical but bridges over into traditional creativity. I'm sure you'll see from my entry in this project what I mean! Even my choices in this project reflect what kind of creativity I'm best at.

I consider all kinds of creativity to be a form of art. My partner doesn't think he's an artist, but I do--he designs publications for a college, which takes a lot of creative attention to detail to make it look just right and let the eye travel around the page with a flow that "feels" good. I'm an artist when I design a scientific experiment. A mathematician is an artist when they design an excellent proof. And I think even auto mechanics can be artists--one once sat in my partner's car as they went for a drive to listen to the vehicle. Five minutes into the drive, the mechanic knew exactly what the problem was. If that isn't an art, I don't know what is.

So I use the term broadly. You are most definitely an artist, too! :)

I wasn't sure if I should, since I may travel... just don't send it to me during college break time or it will be sitting here waiting for me and I will be far far away without ever knowing. I have very few ideas right now, clueless, so we'll see if I come up with any.

Sorry for the delay, everyone. Classes sort of took over my life (but not enough to keep me from this weekend's San Francisco concert--WOW!).

The package is currently en route to hoops. Everything you'll need is in the package, including a roll of packing tape to reuse the box, if possible. Just remember to black out previous addresses and mailing codes with a marker before resending. They get really cranky about that at the post office.

Hope everyone's still on board. Any more takers?

Could use at least two more people, but all of you would be excellent :)

Wondering if anyone had a status on the progress of the project? Last I knew it was en route to Cardiffgal.

Also, if anyone else wants to join on, there's still time. :)

That's a-ok, Elliot! I was just curious :)

It looks like the order will be:
1. Rkitko
2. Hoops
3. Elliott
4. Cardiffgal
5. Karensews2
6. Dian
7. Gísli
8. SongDragon
9. darwoods
10. aabram

Aabram, well, first thing you do is private message darwoods with your mailing address so that when she's done, she can mail it to you. Then once it arrives, you will choose a Janis Ian song or two and design a page to fit in the binder (paper provided with the materials). Crayon, marker, pencil, glue, fingerpaints--go wild! It's a thick cardstock, too, so if you wanted you could even use needle and thread perhaps. Or yarn. Design the page around a lyric you select and those lyrics should be present on the page somewhere. Once you're done, send it along to the next person! The last person on the list will send it back to me for color copying. :)

Message received and fully understood. I shall be adventurous (and you don't know what a former "Special Needs Auxiliary" can REALLY get up to with fingerpaints ;) ) Any more takers???? Knitting could be seriously interesting.

Alright, Rudies, I know this is an OLD thread, but I was wondering what the progress of our LMAO project was.

Last I knew, it was en route to Cardiffgal. Curious minds were wondering where oh where it might be :) No hurry, of course. Art takes time. And as far as I'm concerned, the longer this thing floats through the postal systems, the more awesome it will become.

And, as always, still accepting new names on the list. It currently stands as follows:

1. Rkitko
2. Hoops
3. Elliott
4. Cardiffgal
5. Karensews2
6. Dian
7. Gísli
