UK firefighters suspended for tumble dryer stunt (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/17082006/6/n-odds-uk-firefighters-suspended-tumble-dryer-stunt.html)

LONDON (Reuters) - Four British firefighters were suspended by their force Wednesday over a stunt which saw one of the men spun around in a tumble dryer at their fire station.

The prank, which was filmed on a mobile phone and later broadcast on the Internet, shows one of the officers at Blackley fire station in Manchester climbing into the dryer and padding it with clothes.

The machine is then turned on and he spins around inside a few times while his laughing colleagues look on.

The firefighter then emerges looking dizzy.

"Due to the serious nature of the incident, the decision has been taken to suspend them until the outcome of a disciplinary hearing," said Greater Manchester's Deputy County Fire Officer Tony Proctor.

Media reports said the officer shown in the footage had apologized for his behavior and would be complying fully with the internal investigation.

Because I can't see anything wrong, much less anything "serious", about this.
"Old Spinner" the fireman seems to be:
___Doing this willingly, and
___Having a good time.

So I'm at a loss to understand why they've all been suspended. Was it because his buddies forgot to put in the Cling Free?

Here in the U.S. fireman are (or have been) infamous for drinking and fighting.

Frankly, I don't care if a firefighter drinks, fights, or takes the occasional spin in a dryer, so long as s/he is competent when the truck arrives at my burning dwelling.

But that's just me.

Does this mean that I'm a sick puppy after all?

I'd bet my second best pointy hat that Old spinner is not the first person to have taken a little tumble in a firehouse! <insert wicked grin here>

Redjack: You have watched Shrek too often haven't you? :D (Love it by the way)
Gandalf: Yes, you are.

You do have a point there Gandalf. I also know that I didn't dare to watch the movie. Call me whimp (let's not though) but I have nightmares about these things. Of kids putting their little sister / brother or their pets in there. Scary!

Maybe they got suspended for putting the video on Youtube?

I'm with you, Gandalf. I don't think that he was in any danger, with all the guys standing around watching him like a hawk...it's not like they shoved him in there and left him, fer cryin' out loud...those guys work hard, long, and dangerous when they work, and usually guys who work like that play the same way. They deserve their fun where they find it, imho...it isn't as if they were out beating someone to a pulp, robbing, pillaging, etc.
They thought it was pretty funny, and so do I.
If it were my kid, I'd kill him.

This is hilarious!

We have a commercial dryer like this at work. I bet I could talk more than one of the kennel attendants into getting in and taking a spin! :D

Most people in high stress/hazardous jobs tend to raise hell when off-duty. It's how they stay sane--remember, folks, that "M*A*S*H" (the book) was entirely based on the adventures of real-life people.

I'd say that firefighters are entitled to do crazy things now and then--just as long as, as others have stated, they show up when the alarm comes in.

I agree DaveM. Let them blow off steam. They risk their lives, watch their compadres get injured, maimed and die.
Those who fussed about the firemen's behaivior should be ashamed. If I were one of those who pressed trouble, I would worry about who will help me if my house catches fire.
