Alright... What gives... here it is 4pm and not a single peep from the Picnicers... what gives? Have they been abducted by aliens or pirates? Who won the one legged race? Did anyone serve streepowuffles? What did Redjack do? Who got intoxicated and out of control? Who didn't? Is anybody out there? Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now??? I tried calling both Redjack and Beth on Cells but they didn't answer... What can this mean...???
Someone check in.... Don't make me drive out there!!!!
Grumpy and uninformed R. from Pa
Randy, I suspect they are having very much fun together. And now they don't want to know us anymore... :( ;)
Nae... I think they are just busy. Busy having a good time.

I am a Mainer now! Actually, a month does not qualify me for Maine citizenship. So I'm still a from-a-way-er as it has been put. Soon I'll be driving down to CT with my sister and father, guarding my stuff from being packed, and bringing my sister down to school. Then I have to decide what to do with myself. I am either headed out to Vegas, or staying in CT. I'm scared to decide, as always.
However, I'm with you Randy and Eva, time to hear from those from the picnic. I have to say hi to everyone, see if they remember me.

This is off topic a bit but Great to hear from you Song.... Nevada has it's beauty but so does the Northeast... Rough choice though I know what I would do... If you don't gamble and if you enjoy the beauty of nature you're better off here.. But then Nevada is a great place to visit for three or four days but after that the desert never seems to change.... Hot dusty and full of greedy tourists and slot machines ...
Best to you and yours Song... You've been missed

Must be damned good food....hope we get a peep out of them soon, though. After all, the Cap'n is in the thick of them and if there's trouble, he might need the rest of his crew.

Just a short note to say that despite being surrounded by numerous rowdy Rudies, no one was made to walk the plank. We did end up rolling several well fed Rudies back to their hotel rooms, their bellies filled to bursting with all manner of grilled pig and cow..
I suspect someone will post a more detailed report shortly.. as for me, i'm planning to sleep for the next day or so.. Whew!
Janis, once again I thank you for building such a special community here filled with the best folks I could ever hope to call friends. You missed one helluva shindig :)
Lil Dragon, great to hear from you as well, Happy to know you are having fun as you should be :)
Randy, hope your ears were burning..:D

I got a very interesting phone call here in San Diego last night! 9:00 pm here, so it must have been midnight there! It was Kath of the guitar and a bunch of other "happy", "really happy" Rudies who just finished watching the "Janismania" DVD! Would have been great to have been there!

Just arrived a short time ago (note the time!) from my 7-hour drive from "da 'burgh!! What a fantastic weekend!!
This will be short, but I do want to thank RedJack from the bottom of my heart. OK, the bottom of my stomach! I'd say "HOLY COW!," but I think we ate that, too!
It was great from the moment I followed Marcia and Bat into the hotel parking lot and saw Marjan and Annette sitting on the "porch!"
New friends were made, and old friends were reunited.
I'm getting a bit fuzzy, so I think I'll go to bed. Much more, later!
Oh yeah...in a fierce bidding war at the auction, we raised $300 for the PF!!

What auction? Did I miss the auction?! I guess it was at one of those missed parties. Darn!!
But I didn't miss the stroopwaffels! THANK YOU Marjan!! She couldn't understand why they are so popular but we just can't get them here. At least not the "Real" ones! MMM MMM Good!
No 3 legged or even 1 legged race, sad to say. Irish Beth was NOT in attendance due to the recent loss of her sister-in-law and family matters to attend to. She was missed and thought of.
Everyone was too full for athletics although there was a "game table" so some people played board games, others of us jammed, in between courses!
Heckofa great time! Redjack, did you ever get to eat or did you just sample the food as you went? Cause I never did see you eat anything!

We rolled in from Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon around 2:30pm. John (Mr. Oak Kitten) and I had an absolutely fabulous time, despite some minor self-induced stupidity problems (more on that later).
The early arrivals met up at a Chinese Restaurant, Ya Feo (I don’t think I spelled that right) on Friday night. Redjack is a friend of the owner, and we had a marvelous dinner, with everyone sharing their goodies around the table. We then went back to the hotel, and Leslie and Patrick hosted a get-together in their room. Leslie and Kath brought their guitars and we were all treated to some great music.
As good as the Chinese food was the night before, it had nothin’ on Cap’n Redjack’s home cookin! The food just kept coming all day – beef brisket, shrimp wrapped in bacon, chicken and beef satay skewers, roasted corn, potatoes, Karen’s wonderful Chinese slaw, and the baked bean bread was great too!
Leslie, Kath and Marcia Drummergal had a ongoing jam session most of the afternoon, great music!
Marjan brought me four pairs of Leeuwenhosen as promised, which John and I wore for most of the afternoon. I am sure incriminating pictures will soon be posted.
The next installment of this report is not for the squeamish.
I arrived at the picnic with a pernicious migraine. I had taken 2 Excedrin Migraine pills before we left the B&B, but they were not having any effect. Around noontime I took 2 more. I wasn’t going to let a migraine spoil my fun – but it was still there. So around 4:00pm I took another 2 pills. Around 4:30 I started to feel REALLY bad. Not wanting to spoil anyone else’s fun, I spent the next three hours or so walking back and forth between the two bathrooms located on either side of the picnic area, hoping that if something bad was going to happen, I could get to one in time. I just kept getting worse and ended up sitting in the car as the picnic was wrapping up. We were giving Lucille (Wendy) and her friend Deidre, who had an adventurous trip from Australia a ride back to the hotel in our car, which really is not big enough to comfortably fit passengers in the back. As if they had not been through enough with their travails with U.S. airport security and being sleep deprived for two days, they got ringside seats when I made John pull the car over not more than two minutes down the road leading out of the park, where I promptly fertilized the local flora with all of Redjack’s great cooking. Of course, while this is happening, all the other Rudies are driving by, and get to see the show as well. Leslie came running out of her car with a bottle of water so I could clean out my mouth (Thank you, Leslie). While I was doubled over retching, I could hear John’s cackling laugh, and I thought to myself, “If I live through this, I am going to kill him.” It turns out that he was reacting to a comment made by one of the two Aussies in the back seat, who, on witnessing my plight, piped up with “Is there a doctor in the house?” It took me a couple of hours to figure out why that was funny – of course, it was a very clever play on my newly acquired title – although a Doctor of Philosphy in History isn’t much help in a medical situation. After I finally got sick though, I felt great. So we stayed for a few hours at the hotel and partied with the other Rudies. (I will leave it to someone else to tell the stories about Marjan and the pole dance).
When I told Leslie how many pills I had taken, she was horrified. She said I was lucky to have a stomach left. When I got back to the B&B I looked at the label on the bottle, and it said DO NOT TAKE MORE THAN 2 PILLS IN A 24-HOUR PERIOD. Oops.
So I hate to disappoint everyone, but it really wasn’t Redjack’s fault. But we can blame him anyway, because that is what we do.
Despite that little episode, we had a great time, and it was wonderful to meet such a great group of people. I am on my way to drop off my film for developing now, and I should have some pictures ready to post by tonight.

Oh my goodness, Oak. I'm glad you survived in one piece!
I've heard stories from others on how obtaining a PhD. made them terribly ill afterword. I wonder if there's a correlation between how many degrees you obtain and the severity of the illness? Should I risk certain death by trying to determine a cause/effect relationship in my dissertation? ;)
The Aussie comment was funny, even if you were doubled over. My future PhD. won't be of much help either, unless you'd be in the mood for some herbal remedies?
Hope you feel better soon :)

Rkikto,
I was fine as soon as I finished throwing up, and the migraine was gone too! But I would not recommend that as a treatment. I am probably the only Rudie who lost weight after the picnic!
Well, now that you are forewarned, perhaps you can avoid a similar fate. Good luck with your degree. I'm here when you need someone with whom to commiserate.

I thought I was the only "sickie" at the event. I'm the one who left the Chinese restaurant Friday night so as not to get sick at the table! I think I even saw you (Oak) and John, as I made my way quickly to my van on the way back to the hotel. I missed the parties due to illness. But your story is more "colorful" than mine. Yikes! I couldn't tell you were ill at the Jan-nic. You hid it well until you couldn't anymore!!!!!
And it really wasn't Redjack's cooking which is everything I thought it would be and so much MORE! OMG!!! We were so lucky to bring home leftovers!
And yes, Oak. Check out my picture thread. Gotcha!

Oak, sounds wonderful. I envision many a late night, caffeine-driven, jittery quasi-meltdown. It's comforting to know I can come on here, send you a message and that you'll understand when I say in the whiniest tone possible: "Oak... the tiny print in the Science Citation Index (http://scientific.thomson.com/products/sci/) is beginning to form pictures and patterns. What in the hell is Lucille Ball doing in the Science Citation Index anyway?!" (For some reason, when I hallucinate due to fever, extreme exhaustion, etc. I always see 1950s, '60s, and '70s sitcom characters. Odd, I know.)

Rkikto,
Hmmm, I have never encoutered any of those folks in the Chicago Manual of Style, I guess they must not like the neighborhood.
Keep on pluggin' away and when you are done, hopefully there may be another picnic to attend.
I am not trying to put Redjack on the spot here, I am seriously contemplating organizing one in my neck of the woods at some point - perhaps to coincide with Janis's book tour. But there is no way I would even try to compete with Redjack's cooking. I'll hire a caterer to take the fall instead.
