For those of you who remember Mike Douglas, the talk show host who based most of his career out of Philadelphia, he passed away today on his 81st birthday.
Janis was a frequent guest on his show. I remember various appearances where she sang "I Want To Make You Love Me" and "Candlelight" and even an obscure song called "I Need A Man" with Clair Bay on background vocals. One time Mike Doulgas held Janis close and said, "short on stature but big on talent".
Mr. Douglas spotlighted many musical acts from all genres, including Harry Chapin, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Sly & The Family Stone, The Spinners and The Stylistics.
He was always polite and sincere. He will be missed...

I just heard Larry King on CNN putting out a whole lot of words about him just a few minutes ago and that whole lot of words basically boiled down to "He was a -nice- guy." Having watched him a LOT in my younger days I can't but wholeheartedly agree. He was a -nice- guy.

Ahh...Too bad. I'm sure Janis could reflect about this nice man.

You're probably right, Rick. She seemed to be a frequent guest of his and he seemed to like her very much.

Mike Douglas was a class act and his character was evident by the way he talked with his guests. I hope they release his shows to syndication!

Mike was great to Janis - you could tell he really liked her.
Sad day losing Mike Douglas.

I'm from Philadelphia, and grew up watching Mike Douglas. He was one of the great talk show hosts, and deserves the same recognition some others -- like Dick Cavett -- have gotten. He was also obviously a very kind, generous man.

I became familiar with Janis' "Stars" tour on Mike's show! As already stated by others, he thought very highly of her! And, Jim (great memory) the "I need a man" song is actually on the "Live on the Test" live album under the title "Got to get up". Mike will be missed!

Janis not only guested on the MD show, she was a co-host, if I recall correctly.

Kathleen,
I always wondered about that song, "I Need A Man". It never was on any of Janis' albums and I never heard her perform it again. Could you give me more information on that CD is it on? Is it a compilation list of artist's songs or is it related to a soundtrack of some kind?
Thanks, Jim

"Got to Get Up" is from "Live on the Test", a CD from England that has Janis singing live on a show called the "Old Grey Whistle Test". All of the songs are hers. The majority were recorded in 1976, but there are also "Tattoo", and "His Hands" from the 1991 "Breaking Silence" tour. It's hard to find, but there is actually one on Ebay right now from a really nice seller who specializes in Janis CDs! ;)

Of course, but you asked about the song...
Anyway, the name of song is actually "Got to Get Up." I think the only recording that song has appeared on is "Live on the Test 1976" (a live recording from the UK TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test.") Available here and there on CD but probably officially out of print at this point. It's a fun song.
