What will happen? if i dont watch it does it exist? if i turn it off will it go away? if i wake up tomorrow and turn my tv on, can i go to a day that wont make me cry? if i toss out my tv and computer , will i be safe? sorry about the simple question!
you are asking the right question , Mike. Yes, of course the reality won't go away if we try to "turn it off".
However, you see, not everybody has the same painful reaction to what is going on. For some of us, who carry additional burden of previous hurt, watching THIS reality takes us back SOMEWHERE else, making our reactions sometimes inadequate.
That is the only reason sometimes the advise to "tone down" the reality is a good one,as it helps to keep the "mosters" away.
Once we are better and more ready to deal with it, than it's safe to "turn" the reality's sound a bit up. :-( :-)

Mike, if your not watching the news would make the nastiness in the world go away, many would be all too happy to put you someplace where you'd never see another TV! Unfortunately, we have to deal with the world we've got, not the one we might wish for.
At the same time we need, first and foremost, to take care of ourselves. So if the news upsets you just now, turn it off or limit your viewing to the amount you can handle without becoming overwrought.
Now that I think about it, the average American has little to gain by a steady diet of what passes for "TV news" these days, and little to lose by switching over to Monty Python on BBC America (or whatever you might prefer).
"Where ignorance is bliss" wrote Thomas Gray, "'tis folly to be wise".
