Aside from the fact that its just a great song, I though I'd share the most exquisite memory I have about this song.

Its 1977, I am 17, a senior in high school. My best friend D and I have stumbled upon these 2 women singers (I've forgotten their names), at a local restaurant lounge. Despite the fact that we are underage, we quickly begin to enjoy listening to these women on a regular basis. They do "Watercolors".

At this time, my friend and I were obsessed with "Between the Lines" and "Stars". Looking back at it, I feel a bit embarrassed. I mean, here are 2 young women, playing for tips, singing to the happy hour at the Nighthawk restaurant, in San Antonio, Tx, and there we are, night after night, yelling out "Do Watercolors!". The indulged us every time.

Great Times!

Pesky,

Good story! I was 17 and a senior in high school in 1977 as well. I don't think I had discovered Janis at that point. It was a year or two later when I was in college.

No need to be embarassed...that is just too too cool! ;)

In 1977 I was pregnant with my first baby! I had discovered Janis Ian in the mid 60's during a blizzard that had me stuck in Kansas. The good part about that blizzard was hearing "Society's Child" on the radio for the first time. This was almost ten years before she announced that she was going to retire! I was heart broken to think that there may not be any more coming beautiful songs coming from her. On the other hand I wanted her to be happy, so I consoled myself by telling my head that she needed the time away, or she wouldn't be happy. My heart was a lot less willing to listen to my head. Thank goodness that she came back, and got better and better with every passing year.

I graduated high school in '73 without honors. Just to the relief of the principal and teachers.
Watercolors means a lot to me, because I started listening to Janis Ian along with my older sister in the mid to late 60's.
