Man saves dog thrown from window (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/27072006/6/n-odds-man-saves-dog-thrown-window.html&printer=1)

WARSAW (Reuters) - A man was bruised but alive on Wednesday after a Saint Bernard dog thrown out a two-story window landed on him as he was walking down the street in the southern-Polish city of Sosnowiec.

The 110-pound dog was pushed out of the window by its drunken owner Monday, police said.

"The dog had a soft landing because it fell on a man," said police spokesman Grzegorz Wierzbicki. "The dog escaped with just a few scratches."

"The man was also more in a psychological state of shock than physically hurt," Wierzbicki added.

The one-year-old dog, named Oskar, was placed in an animal shelter while police investigate its owners for animal abuse.

Poor man. Poor dog. How horrible.
And what kind of person is it that throws a live creature out of a window!?

Well that part made me angry too, even if the owner was drunk. Not a good excuse and none could ever be.

This probably made headlines in Poland--the entire country only has a few violent crimes every month.

Recalling my visit of some years ago, my pen pal offered to take me to "the worst street" in town (this in a city of 1.5 million or so). Wasn't sure I wanted to accept the invite, but what the heck, it was an adventure, so I went.

It was a pretty grim area, being half post-industrial wasteland and half grimy apartment blocks with doorways that looked as if someone wearing a trench coat and fedora should be leaning against a wall while smoking a cigarette. And strangely, there wasn't another human being to be seen, and only occasional road traffic.

Wanda said: "can you imagine? Someone was assaulted here just last month!"

That was when I realized I'd never dare to invite her to the United States.

When I lived in Washington Heights in NYC, I once told a visitor that about my apartment building's front stoop. Only I left out the "can you imagine?" part, and it wasn't last month -- it was last night.
