View Full Version : My New Roommate
As some of you know, I moved up to the top floor of my building in February to escape a rather inconsiderate noisy neighbour above me. Well that worked well, and yippee!
However, I then discovered that my South-facing apt having only a flat roof above me now and the same windows 15x4' across turns my place into a large version of an EZ Bake Oven on sunny days.
So for the first time in my life I had to investigate getting an air conditioner. After too much of that, I decided to go with an in-suite style on casters. At 9,000 BTUs it works great against the heat in here, even if its two large inflow and outflow hoses are a tad on the hideous side. LOL It also weighs about 72 metric tons, but by the grace of God, Ken and I managed to get it home in the back seat of his Honda yesterday.
There were some unavoidable spaces around the window insert panel that holds the vent hoses, so Ken helped me most of this morning sealing them up with white insulating tape and weather stripping. Oh, and I also had to take scissors and hack out a corner of my bamboo blinds. But at least now the flying insects and rain have no chance of getting in.
I’m calling him Robby – after Robby the Robot from the Old Lost in Space TV series. After all, his arms when extended did look exactly the same. :p

lol reminds me of an episode of Married With Children where Al purchases a Kaiser 10000 vintage WWII airconditioner. Of course when he fired it up it blew the circuits in the entire neighborhood.
Hey, as long as it keeps you cool, thats the important part. And its not without a certain charm :D !
What ya gonna buy next...A plant for that pot maybe???:D

Now I know where to sunbathe, Dee! :p As long as you don't turn that cold thing on... I had an air conditioner at one point because I always get the hottest room in the house and this one got up to over a hundred degrees. This one happened to be along with my sister. Well, I like it cold (as in freezing) while I'm sleeping so that I can curl up beneath the covers. My sister was always good about waking up until I turned that thing on... I must admit it was closer to her bed than to mine.
Robby... After naming something as weird looking as that I wouldn't be able to be in the same room as it very well. Once I start personifying things, where do I stop?

Well actually Des,
Plants are on the list.
That now empty pot was home to a plant named Ivy (English Ivy) last year, till she died a horrible death from too much heat and not enough light in my old apartment.
Now with Robby in the house, I should be able to let in more light and keep the temperature moderate enough for house plants to survive ... maybe even thrive. I’m thinking perhaps another Ivy for that pot, one or two plants on the corner of my computer desk, and a big leafy something on the floor.

I was rather apprehensive about something like that too Ben, but believe it or not this monster runs on a standard 125 volt household current.
Once I start personifying things, where do I stop?
Oh dear, are we supposed to stop? LOL

Thats actually a really nice installation you two did. A dang sight better than a lot of contractors do down here, let me tell you!
My folks used to have this huge thing that was the size of a clothing dresser, wasn't a true airconditioner in that it didn't draw in outside air, but it was a monster.. I remember every august , when it was really hot.. dad would crank that thing all the way up and we'd be cool for about 20 minutes before it would short out the fuse panel and we'd roast for hours thereafter. He never seemed to learn from previous years.. but i think thats just the Dad gene.
Anyway.. it looks great, is sure to be a conversation piece..and it does its job. What more can you ask? :)

Thanks, Ben.
To tell the truth, I never liked air conditioning – well not until I knew I'd like it better than being cooked to death. Oy!
One good thing is that it draws in fresh air (by the lower hose), so no fear of asphyxiation.
The temperature can be electronically adjusted in steps of one degree, which is terrific, and it also has a dehumidifying mode.
O the wonders of modern technology. Where will it all lead us?
Ever hear the phrase, there’s an elephant in the living room? :p LOL
It resembles the one where I work. It used to be in the directors office (the rest of the workspaces didn't get one of course) If it's kind of the same then it is really good. And you don't have to be afraid that the local hospital won't have electricity because of you.

In the how ironic department, this morning it's 1°C, overcast and windy with mixed rain and snow  and of course I need to go out on the busses to my bi-monthly psychotherapist appointment. I hope he's ready to call for backup. LOL

Dee, have you heard Carly Simon's song, My New Boyfriend? As soon as I saw the thread title, that song got stuck in my head!
Here's the link to the lyrics:
