View Full Version : Incorrect 'warnings' being posted by FB friends

A few months ago, a slew of incorrect warnings were being posted on FB by people who were just copying and pasting from other FB friends. The postings concerned the FB 'ticker' at the side of the page and gave 'advice'on how to disable the ticker. Except the advice was, as Sophos said, 'rubbish'.

The same 'advice' now seems to be spreading among my rudie friends. Please folks, before we copy and paste something a friend has posted, let's stop and think 'who did they copy and paste it from?' and who before them etc etc as this particular post has been going round the world for months.

Here's the post:

Please do me a favour: Hover over my name right here; In a few seconds you'll see a box that says "subscribed." Hover over that and then go to "comments and likes" and uncheck it. That will stop my posts and yours to me from showing up on the side bar for everyone to see and limits hackers from invading our profiles. If you re-post this, I'll do the same for you. Thanks

and here's what Sophos says about it:

This appears to be the most commonly suggested solution on Facebook, and it's rubbish! It still doesn't stop *your* posts being broadcast. It's an illusion. This option stops you seeing when other people have broadcast a message to a wide audience. It does *not* stop your actions being broadcast by your friends!

You have to do this for every single one of your friends. Time consuming *and* it does not solve the problem - it just stops you from seeing it.

Please don't spread this advice, as it is confusing people and stopping the real problem from being fixed.

Ah....someone I know just posted this. I couldn't figure it out but I did as she asked. Now I know what the problem was.
