Anger boiling? Smash plates at eatery

GERONA, Philippines (Reuters) - Ardith Vescara is an angry young woman. On top of family and academic pressure, the 13-year-old Filipino says boys tease her at school.

But instead of letting her emotions eat away at her, she is treating herself to an unusual form of anger management.

At the Isdaan restaurant in Gerona, about three hours north of Manila, Vescara and other patrons work out their stress for 15 pesos (30 U.S. cents) a go by hurling plates at the "wall of fury" emblazoned with words such as ex-wife, boss and lover.

A shout of "tacsiyapo" -- or "shame on you" in the local dialect -- usually accompanies the sound of smashing crockery.

Vases and bowls are also available, while the wealthier of the furious patrons can toss an old TV set for 1,300 pesos.

Not only is throwing things at the restaurant much cheaper than yoga lessons or professional therapy, it is a lot more fun.

"Isn't it better to break these plates than your personal stuff at home?" Vescara said with a smile.

Manila residents fleeing the congested capital flock to the restaurant on weekends before heading to nearby beaches or into the mountains with much less emotional baggage.

Arnold Viola, the manager of Isdaan, said it was not unusual for husbands and wives to target each other on the wall before returning to the restaurant to enjoy a romantic meal.

"The top three targets are boss/manager; wine, women and gambling; and lastly the loan sharks," said Viola.

Angie Trumpeta, a medical student, made the long journey after a marathon run of exams.

"Something like this would help release all of your stress," she said while flinging plates at the wall.

It is not just customers who benefit. Isdaan's staff enjoy throwing plates at the "perennially complaining customers" sign.

An Elvis impersonator who entertains the patrons, Jerwin Cedillo, said it was not always easy dealing with angry people but they usually left Isdaan in a calmer state of mind.

"To most people who have pent-up emotions, this wall of fury is the best way to let go of all your anger," he said.

Yes DB,

Depending on a good day or a bad one, the only problem would be deciding whose names to put up on that WALL OF FURY. LOL

Now, that's my kind of stress release! I would pay that price to break someone elses's dishes...LOL. For me, it would typically be boss/job on that wall. Wall of fury, eh? I love it.

At the last college I worked at, we raised money for one of the student orgs by selling chances to smack up old computer equipment.

For 5 dollars, you got to wield a sledge hammer and destroy 286's, dead monitors, etc.

It was fun, and lucrative!

Ahh Amy, that brought back memories of closing our datacenter. Anything we weren't taking with us got the beating of a lifetime in the parkinglot. I completely enjoyed beating the snot out of an old Xerox printer that had been the bane of my existence...

As for photos on the wall.. i've got a list, they may need to expand the building to accomadate it though.

What a cool idea! I feel a businessplan boiling up here...

But seriously. Doesn't everyone feel so frustrated or angry sometimes that smashing something would really help to feel calmer. What a good idea...

Something a little different: I have heard that there are cheap plates etc. for sale in Greece that are made of a slightly less robust material than regular plates. Their purpose is to get smashed at weddings.

Sirtaki! *smash*

My niece's future in-laws have plans to offer plates at the wedding rehearsal dinner. They've booked a lively Greek restaurant, so I suspect I may get my chance.

whenever i have tried to expell stress or anger thru "striking out" it has always and yes i do mean always blown up in my face... but for fun i'd do it in a minute besides all the research is not in yet on the appropriatness of or the helpfulness of taking out anger in such a way, in many it tends to build a habit out of becoming violent when things go wrong...but not in all, cause we are not all made the same right? right anyway.... i'm babbling, forgive me and lets break dishes together some time :)
peace

We did that at my school too - I donated my '79 Toyota and the students caused $1700.00 worth of improvement....
