View Full Version : Too dang hot to cook!
We've been going through a heatwave the past week here in Ottawa. I am not turning on any stove till we reach sensible temps again.
Tonight's supper: a simple toasted tomato sandwich.
At 5:30 pm it's 32°C and feeling like 39. Tomorrow's forecast is for 33 and will feel like 45. Ugh! I preferred it when we got Summer, not Summer to the max.

How long can one survive on popsicles? My days are numbered!
You know it's hot when you are at your two year olds favorite waterpark, and he proclaims in the middle of the afternoon "let's get the hell out of here."
Tonights Dinner: Ice water, and soggy leftover creamed cheese sandwiches with fresh dill on rye bread from the waterpark today.

Spent the day yesterday on a partyboat on the lake ... the only place around to catch a breeze!
Damn it's HOT!
But looking at the nation's weather map, on the news last night....wow...looks like there are not many of us here in the US that DON'T have the heat right now!!!
I am blessed with a working A/C and I hope that the rest of you have a plzce to keep cool as well!!!
Mine's been running full tilt for days Denise. I would simply bake to death in here without it, no question. It's got 9000 BTUs and I'm needing every last one of them.

It's even very hot here in Manchester. My thermometer is up to 35 C at the moment and it isn't even lunch time yet. Once it gets above 25 C it is too hot for me to feel OK. I like the sunshine though, but not the heat.
I think we should never had polluted the earth. Bad bad idea.
This morning in Ottawa it's 22°C feeling like 30. This aft it will be 33 and feel like 46. That's got to be some kind of record I should think.
BTW Colefan,
I forgot to tell you I searched out this (http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/17506) in answer to your question. ;)

I agree. It is because of pollution. Have you noticed the heat from the sun is a lot fiercer than it used to be? So relentless.

We should hit 95F/35C today just west of Boston. We don't have central A/C and are struggling to install the portable unit we bought last week. I hope we'll get it done tonight

Here visiting Dad. Thank the lord this place is air-conditioned.
Came down on Friday, going home this afternoon. Helped him write yet another memoir about his time in the army. His memory is truly remarkable!
Saturday nite we went to Club Passim to see Cheryl Wheeler. I have been a Cheryl fan for a while, recently really got into her music, but had never had a chance to see her live. She is a great songwriter and performer, and VERY funny. Definitely a must see for those of you who haven't.
Of course, while here, taking "time off", all hell broke loose on the servers back at the college.. an upgrade gone bad, which necessitated me having to reconfigure several systems remotely. Wouldn't have been so bad if I'd had a warning that they were going to do it this weekend!
Grumbling and sweating in Cambridge..

We have the AC blasting all the time. When I was young I loved hot weather. Either THAT hot water was a lot less intense than THIS hot weather...or I'm just really getting old. Either way...ugh.:( If we had a smiley that dripped sweat, I'd post it.

Yes, and against all pop wisdom I've gotten plenty brown on arms legs and face this year (without trying I should add).
PS: This afternoon in Ottawa Canada it feels like 43°C (109.4°F). Mind you this has been going on for days now. Looks like 'mater sandwiches for supper again. ;)

I love the heat and the sunshine! And we never know when it will be over, so I treasure the good weather as long as it lasts. I even have a hint of a tan*. I haven't had a tan in 10 years. I think it looks good on me. The sunshine and the feeling that I look good make me happy.

*"Tan" is a relative thing here because I am usually yellowish pale.
I don't mind Summer really, but this ain't what I call Summer at all. It's something extreme and berserk.
My boyfriend likes this hot weather too Eva. Go figger.

I really don't mind the hot weather too much either. We have one window a/c in the bedroom and have only run it at night. Go upstairs a little early and cool off and watch tv. My car has A/C so its bearable. We have had about 3 days of 88-95 with high humidity. It makes me a bit drowsy, but at least I dont' have breathing problems like a lot of people I know. We definitely try not to turn on the oven during times liket this.
And DavidUK.....I tried to fit into the refrigerator too, but no luck.....:)

No a/c. We had fake lobster rolls for supper. Hubby and I will spend the night in separate rooms so we can each have our own fan. With luck, we'll be in the 70s by midnight and I'll be able to get some sleep.
The weather guessers are predicting severe storms tomorrow afternoon, likely with a repeat of the hail some folks got last week. If you live in the Northeast US and have a car, find a garage for tomorrow.

Dee - off the popsicles, on to creamsicles! Can't believe there is a popsicle diet.
Seen the funniest you had to be there scene this evening. My neighbor came home from work - let his Cocker Spaniel (who I later found out does not like water, or bathing) out the front door to pee. The dog made a beeline for the driveway to the backyard, climbed the steps to their above groud pool, and did a belly flop into the pool.
Smart dog! :) Jimmy walks the dog for one of his clients when he's there, since his client has some mobility problems. Usually the dog will try to drag him to every available thing to pee on, but lately he starts dragging him back to the apartment building after about 5 minutes.

Back in VT and seriously putting my boxers ( yes, I wear boxers!) in the freezer for awhile before I put them on in the morning!
