I'm not a geek, but a stupid fool who got sucked into "upgrading" to IE9 tonight! Ugh...BIG MISTAKE...I couldn't get back to my old home page (MSN) and the layout was terrible. Finally figured out how to do a system restore and went back to IE8 (whew!!).

All you needed to do was select compatibility mode and all would have been sweetness & light... IE9 is the first browser Microsoft has built that doesn't suck like a black hole... I still don't like it, but it works better now than it ever did - if the web-page is coded correctly.

Lori, can I suggest you give some other browsers a try? I really like Firefox, and I know Janis is a fan of Google Chrome, although I had a problem with it trying to read webmail. Opera is good too – I find it particularly fast for uploading stuff to YouTube, or to my own server. If you're happy with IE8 that's fine of course, but I think there are lots of better and faster browsers out there.

I sure wish I knew 1/100th of the geek knowledge you folks have. I've just used Internet Explorer since that's what came preloaded on my Toshiba laptop.
By the way, I'm pretty sure that when I "upgraded" to IE9, I clicked on a checkbox something that said Compatability Mode, but it didn't help with my MSN homepage or e-mail account at all. Several people at work have told me they like Firefox, but I have no idea how to use this. For now I'm happy with IE8.

The truth is, if you install Firefox, you won't notice very much difference except that it works better. The interfaces are very similar. And if you find you don't like it for any reason you can just stop using it, or even delete it if you really hate it! Having it on your computer won't stop you using IE or any other browser. You can have half a dozen of them installed at the same time if you want to, and use different ones for different purposes (e.g. Opera for uploading).

I use IE 8 (I think 9 sucks too) for most stuff, but there are things I do for work that only work correctly in FireFox. Go figure!

I've recently discovered Google Chrome...boy does it really load fast and work really well for most everything I go on the net to do...I still have to use Internet Explorer 8 to VPN into my work environment...hasn't been tested enough to use IE 9 so can't upgrade to it, doesn't sound like I want to...I like Firefox too...till I met Chrome...it automatically updates things like Flash so I don't have to worry about my games dying due to Flash being old...
