God, i will be glad when I can afford a new PC. Had major problems and had to start all over again at ubuntu 8.10 (only cd that works) and upgrade step by step. I got to 10.04, but after upgrade I can't restart to complete the upgrade. Neither can I open the package manager or the update manager. I don't dare restart manually, as the last time I did that I had only a black screen and NOTHING would load.
Any ideas? My only shot now is to leave the effing PC on 24/7 till I can get a new PC later this month.

Any ideas?
Not at this stage... I can't reproduce your problem here, so I can't figure a work-around... sorry. :(

I can't speak to the operation (or lack thereof) of Ubuntu although I would like to at some point because I don't have it installed on anything but I -can- say that just because whomever decides to call something an 'upgrade' doesn't necessarily make it so.
Even though it may be a pain in the a$$ you might have to start all over again just as you did previously (stated above) but then I would suggest that if it's working okay for you at that point then STOP!
You can get a full terabyte external hard drive for around a hundred dollars + or - so you might look into one of those. That way you can do a full system backup of a currently operating system BEFORE you 'upgrade' to a system that's obviously bound and determined to foul you up.
Not all 'upgrades' are actually that. The newest and the latest and greatest is always the best answer.

I guess the gremlins did their thing. Somehow (don't ask, I don't know) the problem decided to resolve itself. I am now running the LATEST version, Ubuntu 11.04, and all is well. For now. I think I will baby this poor PC til I can lay it to rest, and replace it. I have also ordered a new USB drive with 11.04 on it.
That way I don't have to go all the way back to the stone age and upgrade.
