View Full Version : Contest!

Okay, I'm holding a small stupid contest for the holiday cards.
The plan: to print a set of 10 holiday cards, celebrating Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanza, whatever.
The contest: Having seen Oak Kitten's and Amy in Vermont's "Janorah", I'd love permission to use those designs. (Yes, if each of you would send me a high rez copy at janis@janisian.com I'd love that too - along with whether you want the design credited to your board names or real names [and if real, what are they]).
I'm now looking for other designs incorporating the logo. Designs should be simple and obvious - I liked the idea of the logo with a few (or one) ornaments hanging off them.
Winners will receive (what else?) some free packs of the cards...
Rules:
1. Do NOT send me the designs unless requested by me!
2. Post your designs here, or post URLs to them.
3. Don't get too complicated please.
Thanks!
Janis

Sorry I don't have a design to contribute, but I want to say I LOVE the Janorah. I laughed out loud when I saw it...and then thought seriously about converting! But first I'm going to investigate whether they'd consider putting the Rude Girl logo on the Unitarian chalice....

Janis,

I'll be happy to send you my design - but Amy should get the credit - it was her inspired idea in the first place.

I'm no good at design, but a great cross-referencing phrase to place under the winning LOGO/LOGOS (for a holiday card) would be....

"I WISH YOU JOY...."

but, I love the idea of the rude girl logo with a santa hat....

and to expand on Dee's idea with the colored logos...what about a line up of six logos in the rainbow colors not necessarily a holiday notion, but I'd certainly use note cards with that design on them.

Elliot, great with the red nose - please send to me at janis@janisian.com!
Folks, please stick to the request. Items have to use the logo and indicate the holidays - not just a cool graphic of the logo itself. Sheesh. Can't anyone make candles out of the hair? hang mistletoe on the nose?

Why not go abstract? Janis, put your head in a scanner/copier and run off a full-color, hi-res picture. Make sure to move your head around a bit while the scan is in progress. It is actually possible to produce an image via this technique that is barely (if at all) recognizable as human. Sort of a "subliminal Janis"--or a great background for another image.

Folks with large pores--don't try this at home! You'll be self-conscious for a VERY long time after. I once spent some time entertaining several children with a black and white copier and they all wanted to take my "art" home with them. To this day, I live in dread that one of those copies will resurface.

Well, that and the Halloween party pictures from 1991.

I thought the colours were festive enough without being specific to any one particular holiday, even if it was rather Warhol-ish of me. ;)

Hi Janis,
I have been to embarrassed to admit this but I still can't figure out how to make my images Hi resolution. I have followed all the links people posted but have found nothing to help me figure it out how to tell what resolution my pictures are and how to increase resolution if it's not 300 or more. The one thing I can do is make them bigger but I don't know if that's going to increase or decrease resolution. Is anyone else struggling with this problem? Can anyone help?

Amy in Vermont
08-02-2006, 08:00 PM
Anyone that has images they need to adjust the resolution on is welcome to send them to me. If nothing else, I can print them out on a top quality color laser and then scan them back in at 300 dpi!

janisian
08-02-2006, 08:09 PM
Gig, in the best of all possible worlds, you need another drawing program, something like Freehand.
I'd be interested in opinions from all you tech types...

Brain fart! Kimbe told me I sent in a low rez one, then I sent another, but now a 600 dpi uncompressed version is on it's way.

Giggles, I use CorelDraw2 which can save images a specific resolution, just sometimes I forget what I'm doing, obviously. LOL

Thank you Amy Janis and Dee for the help. Amy you are so sweet to offer everyone help like that.

Now I just need to figure out what a perfect image size is for a card. Since I don't have a printer I have emailed a few size samples to my work to print out. Hopefully I can get an Idea of what size would be best for a card and then work on the resolution.

I hope you all don't mind but I have a few more questions I was hoping I could get answered.

What size images has everyone else been sending in?

Janis is there a certain date as to when our images must be in.

Thanks again for all the help you guys. :)

Gigs:

I am fortunate to have all the hardware and software and experienced help when need at my disposal as part of my job. I get stuff like Photo Shop and Acrobat Writer for free , as well as scanners etc.. so if I can use my good fortune to be of service, especially where it benefits the foundation, I am happy to do it.

As far as card size is concerned, I am going to make mine 5x7. Imaged can easily be reduced in size, but enlarging them often makes them look crappy.

While we are on the subject of size tho, Janis, is there a specific size or dimension ratio needed for the bumper stickers?

Dee
08-03-2006, 02:02 PM
Gig,

The tree one I sent was the full size image, 1000 x 1049 pixels equaling 200 KB.

I just assume it's better for the printer to start with a bigger original (for quality) and reduce to desired card sizes?

Oak Kitten
08-03-2006, 02:45 PM
I have resorted to re-drawing the images by hand and scaning them in at 300 dpi. At some point, I will probably invest in a decent program (I've been working in Paint) but that will be down the road.

As to your question, Dee from what I have read, it is always better to start large and size down - going the other way distorts the image.

At the risk of annoying everyone here, I'm really looking for serious universals, or holidays that are celebrated by lots and lots of people. While I recognize the importance of Int'l Women's Day, it's not as recognizable (or usable) as Valentine's, or Christmas, etc.
And also, most of the submissions I'm getting have some element of humor. I think that would be a good thing!
