I've been using efax (http://www.efax.com/) for almost 10 years. There is a free version (which I use) but I couldn't find anything free other than the 30 day trial when I went to the efax site today. I went to the slate link in the previous post and as of now they do not have the ability to receive faxes, just send.

Last year, when I was job hunting, I use www.myfax.com (http://www.myfax.com). Not free, but for $10 a month, cheaper than owning a machine, and easy to send and receive.

A couple of things I really like about efax (and probably any online fax service) is that when I'm on the road I can get faxes and the images are saved so I can revisit them any time I need to.
