Somebody elsewhere just posted this, which looks like a great way to protect your toy now you've finally got your head around it?

So....um, does anyone know how to get files OFF a Minidisc and onto a computer? You can run a patch cord from the earphone jack to the mic jack on the computer, but there's a lot of loss and it takes forever. Sony's paranoia about pirating copyrighted files apparently extends to protecting them against you copying material you recorded yourself!

I never had a problem doing that using the software they supply - the daft part for me is that once I've dragged my own audio onto the computer they won't let me play the original disk any more.
All this palaver with digital simply isn't worth it a lot of the time... I get better sound-quality with an analogue Walkman Pro that I'd get with any consumer-grade digital recorder anyway - with a simple coincident-pair mike like an ecm909 the results can be so good it's spooky.

I have a Sony Mini-disc recorder but I never had good luck with the software, and now since I use a Mac, the software that came with the disc doesn't work on a Mac, so I end up plugging it in through a mini-jack into the computer and let it run in real time into GarageBand, and then I edit it down and save out the tracks. It's a pain having to let it run in real time, but that's what I have to do until I get myself a new digital recorder.
Matter of fact, I just now finished copying some audiocassette tracks into GarageBand, edited and then converted them to Mp3s. Works for me.

Quite a few more modern recorders record .wav any computer can read, direct to an SD card you can lift out and place directly into your card-reader... much less hassle.

I am in the process of getting a new recorder. Meanwhile, I unearthed several minidiscs recorded during Janismania and would love to be able to convert them to something I can actually listen to without headphones.
My guess is that I'll simply have to "do it the hard way", though it will take a lot of time and supposedly the quality degrades somewhat.
Makes me wish I'd taken my 8-track recorder instead.

The compression inherent in the MD format has already compromised the quality more than 'doing it the hard way' will... if you've got a decent sound card your results should still be pretty good.
The weak link will still be the PA - however good it is - rather than anything at your end, unless you managed to blag a feed straight out of the soundboard...

Few people realise how good audio cassettes can be... considering the limitations of their tape speed good ones can achieve some quite remarkable results.

That's true, Rich--the MD clips the highs terribly, which I didn't realize until after I had bought a recorder and used it several times. In 2004 it was more or less state of the art, and digital recorders were far beyond my budget. Now....one can buy a recorder capable of CD-quality Linear PCM recording for less than $100.
And yes, the limitation of any live recording is the quality of the PA. Interesting, though, to listen to those ambient recordings and hear the audience. As it was Janismania, there was a lot of "audience participation".

This is where the whole 'unplugged' concept scores highly... if there's any reinforcement at all it tends to be of a significantly higher quality than normal PA rather than relying on brute force... but yes, the audience are an integral part of the experience in all my favourite concerts and if you can capture that well it's a great way to relive the moment.
