When I first encountered Google Chrome, there was much wrong with it. Yesterday I downloaded it onto my very own computer so that I had something to fall back on should Mozilla Firefox not be working, which it hasn't been lately. I'm using Chrome as I speak, and now actually like it!!!! I always like an alternative web browser in my computer, but this one only had one, (I have Ubuntu, which I love) and I found that Chrome had the very version for it that I needed :) Thank you Google, this is getting better and better all the time :)

There are many concerns about Google Chrome as far as privacy goes. You can see those concerns listed here:

I'd like to suggest the "SRWare Iron" browser as an alternative. It's pretty much exactly the same thing as Chrome but without the privacy concerns. It does -NOT- report absolutely -everything- back to Google. It can use all the same plugins and everything. It's virtually a clone of Chrome. It can be found here:

And don't forget my favourite, Opera: http://www.opera.com/
It's very different - maybe an acquired taste even - but it's been my browser of first choice for several years now, and it's so easy to customise to become exactly right for your taste.
I modify mine to clear away stuff I never use from the toolbars and the right-click context menus as I prefer a minimalist look with more screen-space.

Sounds pretty good, Paularoid, however:
° Does not seem to have any inbuilt firewall like IE, I would not want to have any 'external' firewall!
° Whatelse is missing vs. IE ... what are the (not mentioned!) cons

IE doesn't have an 'inbuilt firewall' - although the latest versions of Windows do, and the same one is used by whatever browser you choose to use unless you explicitely choose to disable it. However, it's a very rudimentary one that only blocks incoming traffic and completely ignores outgoing.
Why don't you want to use an 'external' firewall? That sounds misguided at best...
Is the problem figuring out how to use it?
Some of the best security software includes a built-in firewall that's substantially better than the Windows one and completely automated for all normal purposes.
Kaspersky is the security suite I use and recommend, and the firewall in KIS is totally pain-free, while also very effective - and for more advanced users it can be set up to allow access to certain ports if you're running a web-server at home.

"Chrome" doesn't have an "inbuilt firewall" either and neither does "IE" (Internet Explorer) so your point would be???? As for the "cons" they shouldn't be any different than those with Chrome seeing as how they're both almost exactly the same thing with the exception of Iron not reporting on -every- -single- -thing- that you do right back to Google. If you're using Chrome and you like it, why not try out Iron and see if you like -it-. After you decide which you do or don't like, use it and dump the other. All the same applies to Opera as well. Try it out to see if you like it and dump it if you don't. Opera's got a really nice email feature integrated with it. The -only- reason I don't use Opera is because I've become too dependent on all the neat extensions that I use with Firefox. Same with Iron or Chrome. I know there are extensions to use with all of those but not the ones that I like. To get the same use out of them I'd have to use "external" programs and it becomes a hassle updating and tweaking everything when you do that.

But does Iron work with Ubuntu??? Time for some investigation, I think... :)
Rich I tried downloading Opera, but couldn't get it to work with Ubuntu
One thing I have noticed is that the set smileys don't work on here with Chrome, which is a bit of a major setback
Thanks for the advice, Paul

PS This will take some time, so I think I would rather download it in the morning. I have noticed it DOES work with Ubuntu/Linux, so I'm happy to try it :) Thanks A

If you download it using Ubuntu, the correct version should automatically install... I've never had any problems, so what's happening for you?
The only issue used to be with Flash - but that's the same for any browser on Debian based distros, and I understand they've got that sorted out now even for 64-bit hardware.

Rich, dear... There are other computers with Ubuntu which behave like that perfectly, and then in a world apart from those, there is MY computer!!!!! Won't let me do anything like that!!!! Doesn't like my other phone and other niggly stuff. Settings need revamped, but seeing as it has it's own personal valet for that, I'll let him do the worrying. It's a wonder I'm getting to watch Black Swan on it!!!

Babs has one like that.
It's absolutely identical to mine with the exception of whatever the heck it is she does to computers while I'm not looking... but it takes twice as long to start, then sits there looking baffled when you ask it to do stuff.
You know how owners and their pets become more and more similar?
I wonder if the same thing happens with computers?

YES, YES, YES !!!! That's my computer > my darling DONALD ,,,,, i.e. he helps me think & in return I keep him updated and clean. He also gets new hardware every now & then (which he thankfully accepts - at least most of it) ;)
We wouldn't BE without each other. I can feel when anything is wrong with him! .... There IS a certain similarity :=)
