Hi all!
I'm brand new to this board and am still trying to navigate around and make sense of everything.

The main reason I wanted to join up was to talk briefly about the Janismania dvd which I have just received from the Janis Ian website.

I just wanted to say how impressed I am with it. I listened, enthralled by the Artistry discussion on the first disc and I must admit it has given me much to think about.

I have written an album's worth of material which I am just starting to record with a view to going out and performing it. I have now started to think more about the the other facets of performing, something that I had not really considered up until this point. But now I will. There was so much good advice on there that I will listen to it many times over the coming weeks.

I want to think Janis for making the information accessible to all. It is obviously something she knows a lot about and has worked with over the time that she has been performing. It's like a summary of all of the experience she has gained in her life, condensed down into a valuable hour of concentrated and concise information that all potential and existing performers can benefit from.

Thank you thank you thank you!
Much love
Rachel.
xx

Hi Rachel, welcome to the Board. I am sure Janis will be delighted with your message - I know encouraging younger artists is something she is very committed to. Are you going to get the opportunity to see Janis live when she comes to the UK later this month? I hope so; check out the tour schedule; tickets are selling fast!

Hi Rachel- welcome!

as Anna says, do try to make sure you get to see Janis live- among other places she is playing in London and Brighton - in your neck of the woods...

Hello Rachel,

Welcome... Yes to us Janis is a magic person... Not only can she write and sing... but she also entertains... not in the sense that so many do jumping up and down with flashes and bangs... but she moves peoples minds, bodies and spirits... At a Janis Ian concert you will often see a great hush over the crowd... not because the audiance is napping but because she's got every fiber of our brain chasing to catch every word and phrase.... Her wit and wisdom are also pretty amazing... You want to go see her while shes touring your neck of the words or you might have to wait until 2008 as she's not touring next year... You could do FAR FAR worse then learning your performance licks and wisdom from this great troubador...

Best to you and yours

R. from Pa

JanisMania was an incredible experience! And that was my 2nd Janis master class. Completely different from the first but just as informative and interesting. Glad to hear that you are benefitting from Janis' wisdom! Stick around. Janis often stops by the message board to say hi. And by all means, DO check that UK tour schedule. Surely there is a concert or 3 for you to see....and Janis in PERSON is an absolute MUST!!!

Rachel, welcome - you might also want to check out the Articles in the Prose/Print section. We're still adding to them... eventually they'll all be up.

Welcome to the JIMB Rachel - there are quite a few UK Rudies here. If you can get to the Brighton Concert on 17 April you will meet 17 of us!!

The first master class was more about songwriting and how some lines of a song work, how they might work better if...... And it was about the music business in general. Also, Janis played ALOT of songs for us, kind of a mini-living room concert and master class all rolled into one!

The JanisMania class (as you probably know) was about stage presence and awareness.

Welcome to the messageboard!

I was also impressed with the JanisMania DVD, as was my family, even though they aren't Rudies as I am. We loved the Masterclass, all the discussion especially. It made me feel like I was right there, though the fact that I wasn't made me wish to heck that I was.

I think the JanisMania DVD is one of the great bargains of recent times. Where else can you 5+ hours including a Janis Ian concert, a Master class, and loads of unscripted silliness from a fair number of folks who post on this board (yes, I was there) for $20? Cripe, people pay several times that to watch pay per view mud wrestling on cable.

Still waiting and hoping for JanisMania II....though I rather wonder if Janis has ever recovered from the original!

Hello all, thank you for replying and making me feel so welcome.

Yes, I've got tickets for Janis' show in the Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone, Kent, which is just around the corner from me. I can't wait!

I also watched the Live at the Club Cafe dvd this weekend too. It was great stuff. A brilliant concert with great extras.

I must say that I am very impressed with the service offered via Janisian.com. So efficient with items extremely well packed etc. I have made about 3 orders now, including the re released poetry book that Janis wrote all those years ago. And to my surprise and delight the book was signed. Such a nice surprise.

Thank you so much for everything!

Not particularly interested in recovering myself, come to think of it.

By the way how do you DO that?

Rachel, I guess you are referring to my post where I mentioned the first master class I ever went to. I am sure it wasn't Janis' first master class. I have no idea when she gave her first class or whether or not it was filmed. I wish I'd had a video camera with me that day though!!

Marcia :)
