A GPS is right up there next to smart phones on my list of things NOT to have.
The only trip I ever took using a GPS (I was NOT driving, my friend was) was hysterically absurd. My sense of direction got us home after the GPS got us hopelessly off track. In the snow. In the mountains of Central Vermont.
We still joke about that trip.

The first time I drove under the direction of a GPS was when we were in Pittsburgh. It was Joan's GPS, but I was driving, a rental. Scared the crap out of me!
The 2nd time I used a GPS was on roads that I knew so that went well. :D
My third time using a GPS, I again was driving a rental car. I was on the way to my migraine specialist's office at one of the Boston Hospitals but didn't know way 'cause I always had taken a cab. I wasn't looking at the GPS, only listening. Had my eyes on the road! I did what Miss WhatsHerName told me to do and the next thing you know I ran broadside into a big SUV. Seven thousand dollars damage to the rental. Ended up in the ER where my doctor worked but missed my appointment. I really had a headache too! I didn't get a citation but I was afraid I was going to get shot. I looked up the person I hit and she had been arrested several times for being in a drug ring and for wire taping.
I think it's a good idea that I no longer rent cars or use a GPS

Well, I've had mine for about three years now... and I haven't ran into anything... although for some STRANGE reason... when I get in front of RandyPA's house... it always tells me to go in the opposite direction! Hummmmm.......

I am directionally challenged, especially since I've moved down here. Shoot I need to use Rhoda Rose when I go to friends' houses in Hilton Head or Sea Pines Plantations, both places are huge and filled with winding roads. The M who cooks got me Rhoda Rose (Rhoda because she tells me which Road to be on and Rose for Compass Rose, two names because we're in the south) for my birthday after I took a wrong turn driving back from Gastonia, NC in January of 2008. My car doesn't have a compass and I'd driven about an hour and a half from Columbia, SC when I saw a sign that said Asheville 35 miles. My immediate reaction was to think, "Gee, I didn't know there was an Asheville SOUTH Carolina." Then I saw the mountains and realized there isn't an Asheville SC.
Every now and then Rhoda leads me astray but not nearly as often as I would lead myself astray. So you can bet I got her packed up and shipped back to be fixed today. Hopefully she'll be back before my next road trip.

Rhoda Rose, huh? Bat named our Garmin (fortunately not recalled), "Della" after....Della Street from Perry Mason. I know, Andy and Elliott already know that story!
Anyway, she truly has a mind of her own. She likes to take you someplace one way...and takes you back a different way. Sometimes she gets a little confused but more often than not, she gets us where we want to go....creatively at times but she gets us there!

Thank goodness we have a Tom Tom and not a Garmin...we haven't usedours very much but if it can keep us from getting as lost as we do without it it will be worth it and so far it has...

Mary, it's just so personal; who would you trust to lead you? (Like you probably wouldn't want to call her Amelia; you certainly wouldn't want to call her Joan!) Cheryl Wheeler calls her Lana because it sounds like Lana Turner half wasted (really encourages you to follow those directions) sometimes I think I should call mine "Recalculating". Sorry I can't come up with any suggestions but I'm sure someone else can come to your rescue..wait...is Sacagawea too long? jm

Me and Greener. Middle of the night. Somewhere near Clearwater, FL. In a rental with a rented GPS. Leaving Dr. J, Kath and Luce in some Golfing resort thing. No moon, no stars. GPS fades to black. I look at Greener. Greener looks at me. We were lost in the land of the gators. Really lost. Got to go now... exciting things are happening in Houston!

Two years ago I visited my cousin in Fla. and he gave me his GPS to use with my rental car. I named her Shirley, because she would Shirley get me where I needed to go. Without her, I would probably still be lost in Orlando somewhere.
After the incident with Elliott and the untimely death of our GPS, when I returned to Fla. for the Janis Ian Roadtrip #2, I bought my own Garmin and named it..what else....Roady.

Andy, has Roady been recalled? I just checked tracking and Rhoda hasn't made it to her destination yet. What do they expect? I had to deplete her batteries before I shipped her. (I did include a note suggesting they could upgrade the maps at no charge to me to compensate for the inconvienence..not holding my breath on that one.)
Elliott...how could you forget Marjan? Bringer of the Straffwaffles or whatever they're called (I just call them damn good.) We did have fun that night after the concert (concert was great too, of course) and I really enjoyed listening to Kath and Andy play guitars. It was, however, an early morning call for me as I headed back north to make sure I got to the SAV airport in time to pick up the M who cooks (he said I was just stopping because I needed a new driver).

I love my life.... And man, do I know how to pick my friends or what? That was almost like being there! Thanks all, for the flash back. Let's do it one more time; once is never enough! Forget Marjan? As easy to pour the ocean into a shell... That's all I'm saying. Geez, what a fun trip. Thanks for that!

Whew! After checking the serial number, Madge does not have to go traveling without me! Her model # was recalled, but she must not have the faulty battery.

Thanks JoanM, I only wish my Garmin Nuvi 680 has been recalled.
It cost a bundle, I've downloaded new and improved maps and it still
lies to me, often! Especially in Nashville. When I contact Garmin they
want the exact details, the time of day I am traveling, the freeway
numbers, directions and the error. Yikes, I am not yet familiar with
this area and not able to jot down all of that as I am motoring down
the freeways. All I know is that at times, Lucille [that is what I named her]
tells me to exit right and I see my intended freeway flash to the left, gads.
When these mis-directions happen in my city of Phoenix, I am wise to
the freeway directions and Lucille's errant ways.
Please let it be recalled. Thanks for listening, p

According to UPS Rhoda Rose arrived about a week ago to be fixed. According to the status on the Garmin webpage, they are still awaiting her arrival. I just called Garmin and was told there is a lag between getting the package and entering it into the system therefore I shouldn't be concerned. (How can I not be concerned? Rhoda has a dead battery and is at their mercy!) I was told to look for her return 10-14 business days from when they received her. So, if you've had to send yours back, make sure you keep the UPS tracking # because that will give you more information that you'll be getting on the Garmin status update page. jm

Rhoda's back and talking to me again! Actually she's been back for over a week but the first thing I had to do was to give her a complete charge. I tried to charge her via usb from computer but that is a "trickle" charge and really didn't work. She needed a four-hour charge and since I wasn't driving anywhere off island I couldn't do that via the car. I finally spent $10 for a new tip for my iGo house charger and charged her here in the house. She's all charged, seems to find and lock on to the sat a lot faster (even in the house) and, I didn't lose any of my favorite places so they truly did return my Rhoda Rose to me. We'll be taking a trip to Jacksonville, FL on Saturday to hear Mary Chapin Carpenter so she'll get a chance to strut her stuff! jm

Back on topic, I'm with Judy - I have no sense of direction, and our Nuvi 350 has really been a life saver. Oh, you can't trust it too far - Deb and I once headed out to the Philly Folk Festival, only to wind up facing a cow pasture gate while contemplative bovines swatted their tails at us - but if you get it set up correctly for your needs, it really can be a wonderful thing.
Side note - since getting my Droid X (which I still don't really know how to work, and I'm sure there are millions of things I could be doing with it that I'm not) and discovering its GPS capabilities, finding my way around has become even easier.

I have a Garmin 255W and it's served me well over the past two years, only twice I've had a slight wrong direction given... once because I was given an incorrect name of a street to begin with, and the only other time it was wrong was in front of RandyPA's house!! (figures) It told me to go right when Randy's house was on the left!
If your Garmin has a 'pushy' personality, you could call it Bully, as in Bully Vard.
Or Avon, as in Avonyue, Or Lois, as in Lois Lane...I like that!

Oh, Bat... I like Lois... Lois Lane... yes.
