I have a dell inspiron E1505 and one day i lost the ability to use my tim warner cable wireless service. I have checked that end of the situation and everything is perfect. I have a Netgear router, when the computer and the router are connected by cable, as is right now, as you can see, I get service. If i "unplug" the router from my computer I no longer get wireless service. does anyone have any ideas? I'm 99% sure that the problem is with the computer. any help would be much appreciated. Oh the computer tells me that wireless service is availible and working, and ready to accept it whether it is plugged in or not. thanks so much!

Hi Hoops -- I'm definitely NOT technologically inclined. However, the other week when my HP laptop crashed I ended up purchasing a cheap Toshiba laptop from Best Buy. Unfortunately, I did not set up my router and modem for my wireless service (can you say "Geek Squad"), so did not remember what my wireless password was.

So...I was told by Geek Squad to contact my ISP (Comcast), who walked me through making an Internet connection test using USB cable from router to my laptop. Once that worked he said I had to contact the manufacturer of my router (in my case, D-Link). Their service rep was then able to walk me through the steps of reconnecting and setting up new wireless password. Bottom line...you may want to call your router manufacturer to see if they can help.

Sure wish I knew more technical advice, but I'm definitely not an IT kind of gal.

I'm not sure which OS you have Hoops, but in the Control Panel of Widnows XP there is a Wireless Network Setup Wizard that guides you through the steps. I've never used it but maybe that would help you?

Lori and Dee, thanks for the advice. I did go thru the process a couple times of resetting up my router, modem, computer connection with no luck. I know i should bring it in to have it looked at, i'm just hoping someone will have the cure and it will be simple and I might learn something in the process.

I wish I could help a bit but I have to admit that I'm a hardware mechanic for the PC itself and most things that plug into it (printers, fax machines, etc.) but for work of this type I'm lacking. I would put my youngest son to work on it if he wasn't at a distance and involved with his own familial life at the moment. He's a real wiz at this type of thing. He can't format a floppy or plug in a chip or a board but at this type of work he runs circles around me.

Of course . . . I'd have to tear him away from his computer games . . . . .

Hoops,

I'd say if it only works when it's connected by cable than the wireless isn't working. This happened to me a couple of weeks ago when I unplugged my modem and router. I spent all day screwing around with it, researching on the internet, etc. I essentially ended up uninstalling the router and reinstalling it because all the settings were lost. Maybe someone here can walk you through it.

Good luck!
