You're right, Mike. When I'm depressed I'm more likely to do stuff that's good for me, like writing, spending time with my animals, singing, taking walks, and listening to music. If I'm in a happier mood I'm likely to just turn on the boob tube.:( :)

You're absolutely right, Mike! Instead of sitting here in the silence, I'm going to put on some Janis right now! I think Folk Is The New Black would be a good one to make me laugh! :)
Thanks for this post, Mike
I was severely depressed during the 70s after my first adult love was killed in a car wreck. I think I nearly wore out the vinyl of Between The Lines during that period. Janis didn't know it, but she was helping to save my life!
Between the lines has been very good to me too. However, I do prefer to listen to Janis when I am not depressed. :)

Best thing about being depressed is the moment when you suddenly realize the blackness has passed.
Strangely, Janis' music has little appeal for me when I am depressed. For those periods, Sarah McLachlan, The Doors, and Pink Floyd seem to do the trick. And Natalie Merchant's "Ophelia" album when I feel like singing along.

and funnily enough, I can't write at all when I'm down. My saddest songs are always written when I'm feeling my best. Go figure...

I listen to Leonard Cohen when I'm depressed. Always makes me feel better. His words and music (and voice) can reach deep inside me like no one else. Even just a CD of his poetry. Janis is for me to listen to after along hard day with a glass of good red wine, :)
Janis, in what kind of mood are you in than when you write funny / happy songs?
Dylan, I think I threatened my cousin once. He was very depressed and had the same Leonard Cohen CD on for over a week. Night and day. Day and night. It had been my own present to him. Now, I am happy when a present that I bring is appreciated, but there are limits and it had reached mine. I threatened to either break his CD in two or kick his ass. He chose to put on a different CD. Phew!

heh heh. I don't go to those extremes with any artist. Usually two plays of any CD is enough for me.
Mind, I've been listening to Odetta's "To Ella" CD a lot today. :)

Eva and Nina -- it depends on which Leonard Cohen CD you're talking about. I always get a big laugh out of his "Death Of A Ladies' Man" album, which was hideously overproduced by Phil Spector. It's just such a WEIRD recording -- it sounds like a Captain Beefheart parody of Phil Spector! :D
On the other hand, if it was "Songs Of Love And Hate" being repeatedly played, I'd worry about the person...great album, but not exactly cheer-you-up stuff...especially "Dress Rehearsal Rag!"
